Also my son snagged 4 tickets to the Pacers preseason game against the Memphis Grizzlies. First row of the upper deck at center court for $22 apiece. Colts were out of town during my stay.

I hope to see Swider in action along with a fully healthy Mathurin. Of course will be curious to see if any other players games look different or improved.

Would love to hear what you think after the game? :)

Will report back on what I see even though it’s preseason it won’t be too long before the season starts.

I also left out that I hope to see big strides from Jarace Walker.

Fan Jam is a welcome back to the start of the NBA season promotional event heavily geared towards the kids which my grandson was with us. I saw a lot of young parents or mothers with their children today wanting to see their favorite players/team. Not as many of the older fans that attend games were present

The first 5,000 fans got a hot dog, chips, and can of soda plus an XL size Pacer t shirt. The Pacemates danced once and Boomer’s power pack did their dunking once. Of course the Pacers were trying to sell tickets to the upcoming season. Doors opened at 10:30, event started at noon with Carlisle introducing most of the organization except the front office. I think we were heading home by 1:30pm.

The format for Fan Jam was a 4 quarter scrimmage with a very short halftime. The assistant coaches were split up to coach the 2 teams while Carlisle was the emcee and watched. Real NBA refs were used but only obvious fouls were called. I’m sure it’s like practice for everyone working in the arena to put today’s event on.

Although they were present Isiah Jax and Furphy were the only players who didn’t play I think due to injury. Wiseman coming off an injury only played in the first half.

The white team was composed of the starters, rookies, James Johnson, and Kendall Brown.

The blue team was basically all the second team plus Quenton Jax and Swider.

Andrew Nembhard led the winning white team with 20 points and looked very aggressive going 6-for-8 from the field (2-for-3 from 3-point range) and 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Myles Turner added 13 points, Siakam 7 rebounds, while Tyrese Haliburton tallied 11 points and five assists in the victory. All of the starters looked good in my opinion. Freeman looked ok. Newton, Brown, and Johnson were non factors during their minutes.

Obi Toppin led the Blue team with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting, while Jarace Walker(3 assists) and James Wiseman(3 rebounds) both added eight points apiece. Sheppard went 3-3 and Swider was ok but didn’t stand out. Q. Jax had a huge dunk and pestered Nemhard defensively at the end of the game. Benn Mathurin was aggressive but it wasn’t his or TJ’s day scoring going 1-8 and 1-5 respectively. Mathurin did have 5 rebounds and TJ had 3 rebounds and 7 assists.

After the scrimmage Myles took the mic and the rookies plus new staff members had to dress up in costumes selected by Turner. Next they each 1 by 1 sing a song Myles picks for them. Lastly the 3 rookies had a dance off showing their moves. Enrique Freeman was the winner of these events per the fan applause vote. There were also photo ops with selected players after the game but we didn’t stay for that and maybe other opportunities which always have long lines.

Overall it was a fun time where in a nutshell we watched a practice scrimmage game with lots of other fluff involved in the day.

Not much to report from game analysis so hopefully I can report back better insight from the preseason game in a week versus the Grizzlies.

While most of us expect the season opening roster to be 14-15 players and 3 two way players I found a few interesting paragraphs in Tony East’s article today about the final roster spot battle.

Multiple Indiana players are signed to contracts that are not fully guaranteed for the coming season. Kendall Brown and the newly-added Cole Swider won't earn money unless they are on the Pacers roster come opening night. "He's a guy competing for the 15th spot," Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle said of Swider. James Wiseman ($500k) and James Johnson ($750k) have partial guarantees in their contracts for the 2024-25 season. In theory, any of them could be involved in the battle for the last spot on the roster.

In reality, it likely comes down to Swider, Brown, and perhaps the players on two-way deals. Currently, the guys on a two-way contract in Indiana are Quenton Jackson, Tristen Newton, and Enrique Freeman.

Both Swider and Brown are technically two-way eligible, so there are a lot of moving parts, but their willingness to take a two-way deal is unknown. Their contracts can't be directly converted.

"Whether it's him (Swider), whether it's Kendall, or whether it's one of the guys that's presently on a two-way [deal]. That's kind of where that is," Carlisle said of the Pacers final roster spot. "I'm anxious to see how these guys compete."

"It's not [certain] that we [will] keep a 15th person. Someone's got to earn that spot," Carlisle said.

We were told Swider didn't want a two-way and that's why he signed here. I thought he played well tonight in Atlanta.

I would caution to firmly say that Swider has NOT YET made the roster. The only takeaway we can take from this move is that Kendal Brown did not make the roster.

Even if he starts the season on the roster, his current deal is not guaranteed so he could be waived until January at minimal cost.

Then who is taking his place ?

I’m out of here if they promote Newton, Q Jackson, or Okafor to the 15th spot. Not worth talking about an organization that does stupid moves.

Keeping James Johnson over Swider is assanine. They have coaches that can give them the insight Johnson gives them. Pargo was a player.

The only player who deserves it would be Freeman but he should be on a 2 way. Who takes the 2 way ? I would be less pissed if Swider is a 2 way although he probably deserves better.

If Swider is signed elsewhere and he helps another team then that will suck.

when we signed Swider someone reported that he had turned down a two-way from the team he was on last year and didn't want one here. Freeman has earned the spot but they really don't need to rush to fill it and might want to see who gets waived elsewhere (McDaniels?)

Maybe a team cuts a player that doesn’t have a chance with them and the player is a better player than Swider ? IDK if any exist.

Horses for courses. Better at defending but worse at shooting could be a better fit for us

Plus, don't forget Furphy. He might be a younger Swider+

Scott Agness reports the team picked up options on Mathurin, Sheppard, and Walker. No surprises there.

Maybe no one, for now? Gives a little more tax space for a midseason deal (which we may need, if we have any plans of trying to keep Myles at years end). Or someone getting waived elsewhere this weekend in final cutdowns?
I’m out of here if they promote Newton, Q Jackson, or Okafor to the 15th spot. Not worth talking about an organization that does stupid moves.

They legally can’t promote Okafor. He’s not under contract. He’s getting sent to Ft Wayne for an exhibit ten bonus. He’s also very unlikely to ever be considered for a big league spot.
Keeping James Johnson over Swider is assanine. They have coaches that can give them the insight Johnson gives them. Pargo was a player.

Haliburton wants James, so James stays. And James also seems to help a lot of guys just play more consistently and better. For two guys that are neither likely to play, I see why James is kept. Though, he’s non guaranteed too, and he could be waived later for a trade (like he has been the last two seasons).
The only player who deserves it would be Freeman but he should be on a 2 way. Who takes the 2 way ? I would be less pissed if Swider is a 2 way although he probably deserves better.

I think that Swider is basically just never going to play unless Furphy (and others) is (are) injured?

I too would prefer to keep the 15th spot filled and Swider seems fine enough there. But he’s just so low stakes to me, and I see an immensely tough road for him to ever get minutes, that I’m just not bothered. It’s super low stakes.
