How do you want to see minutes distributed?

Post#1 » by sco » Sat Oct 19, 2024 1:44 pm

Key questions to me are:

1) Does anyone on this roster NEED to play more than 30 minutes?
2) How many minutes can we safely play Ball? Technically, there will be more minutes available because he'll be sittion our at least 13 B2B's.
3) Can we get away with an even time split at C?
4) How many minutes does Matas need to develop this season?

Billy doesn't do hockey rotations. I think the primary 6 will be Zach, Vuc, Giddey, Coby, Ayo and Pat. They'll get their 30+ each. Ayo and Lonzo first guys in. Lonzo is going to get 15 MPG, with rest on B2Bs.

IMO Ayo will be a high minute glue guy. I could see Giddey and Pat getting minutes chopped if they struggle.

Phillips/Matas/Smith get 15-20 each.

That's already 9. I don't see Terry, Craig, Jevon, Duarte, THT playing much besides garbage time or during the usual Bulls injury wave. So I guess I do see them playing.

If the Bulls do, you would be complaining to much to ever hear it.

NBA fan logic we need to trade one of two best players because (Player X) one needs to shine more.

For nights. When Ball plays, about/averaging:

1/3: Giddey 28; Ball 20
2/1: Coby 32; Ayo 16
3/2: LaVine 32; Ayo 16
4: Pat 28; Matas 16; Smith 4
5: Vuc 28; Smith 20

Tossing in some Phillips or Craig at the 4 if Matas fouls too quickly, or Pat stinking, or don’t want any time going bigger with Smith at the 4. Maybe also some time with both Giddey and Ball out there.

When Ball doesn’t play, Ayo takes his minutes at the 1/3 (and Giddey gets a few more, too), and maybe some to THT, with Ayo’s minutes at the 3/2 going to Phillips or Terry or Duarte or THT.

I agree with the vast majority of this. The only part I'm skeptical about is the Phillips minutes. I although he looks vastly improved, I don't know if he'll be in Billy's rotation right out the gate. So I'd expand Jalen Smiths minutes to around 25mpg. And the others Pat should eat up.

Not sure why you think Phillips should play 15 to 20. I think he will be lucky to see 10 most nights. P

I agree. I could see him as the primary beneficiary of those b2b's when Ball's out. Look at me assuming Ball plays those other games.

Since arriving here Vuc has played 33 minutes a game every season, hoping he's getting a near 20% minute reduction for Jalen Smith is just not realistic.

I dunno - JP looked like the most efficient of the DJJ/Javonte role guys. More energy, better 3P% than Terry/Craig. Doesn't need any plays or ball-usage whatsoever (unlike Matas, Terry, even Pat).

I also agree that this is about right, but would add a few wrinkles:

- I think Smith is in the core rotation as well or else he wouldn't have signed here. I think he gets minutes no matter what.

- Matas and Ball round out the core rotation, but these spots are more fluid. Ball due to health, Matas due to play.

All of those guys should be able to pencil in at least 15 minutes a night barring injury. And that's our main rotation. The 10th spot is super variable and doesn't mean much to Billy.

And that brings you to the logjam of Phillips, THT, Terry, Craig, Duarte and Carter. That's a bunch of undifferentiated mediocrity. Phillips seems like he's in the lead, but I doubt anyone from this group has a secured spot in the rotation and their playing time will fluctuate greatly with level of play and injuries.
