26M in 29-30 is only going to be like 11% of the salary cap.

I hope this all works out to be something like Aaron Gordon's contact negotiations. Starting with the player asking for max, and settling on a contract that started at 19% of the cap, and then leveled off after year one.
For Suggs, this would be something like a 28M extension on year 1, and then with sub-5% raises from each year on. Something like a 120M deal on 4-years would look like
28
30
31
32
That would be a very palatable deal for the Magic's cap. Is it "fair" to Suggs? Well, he might get more on the open market. But how does one walk away from a guarantee of 9-figure income offer? A 100M+ contract is not only life-changing money for his family, it guarantees that his children, their children, etc. are very affluent: forever.
..
Seems like you absolutely nailed it with this prediction.

This structure leaves plenty of money to extend AB and Jett. It really squeezes those middle class salaries in the near-term. Anyone on a team option next off-season has to be feeling the pressure.

29-30 will also be last year of his contract. Ditto to Franz.
Megamax for Banchero or Franz would be starting around $85-92M a year

There are only 2 players on team options. Moe and Gary Harris.
Picking up both would send us to luxury tax.
Picking up Moe + rookies = luxury tax.
Picking up Harris + rookies = near luxury tax.
Picking up both and not trading away two first round rookies would send us at a verge of first apron.
It goes without saying that within next 2 years roster will need trades to cut down quantity in favor of quality in order to contend. Picks, assets for lead guard, obviously.

Re: Magic Sign G Jalen Suggs to a 5 year, 150.5M Contract Extension
Its a little rich but that seems to be the market. If his shooting is similar to last year we wont lose much on the deal. I dont think we have much room for the deal to become a bargain becouse i dont think Suggs can become lead ball handler. I think we can lose if his shooting diminishes or he is injured. It also makes extending Black and Howard harder, but at the same time maybe we will be able to resign them cheaper. They wont get that much exposure with how crowded our backcourt is.
We will need to shoot a lot more 3s to be even average offensive team. Jett fits in that vision. Black started to make nice passes to shooters, ability Cole cant grasp. Suggs is not shy to shoot so its not that devastating but he is also not elite shooter, at least not yet and league promotes great shooters more and more even if they are not elite defenders.

My money is on Banchero going number 1 !

I voted for 24-30 range option in the poll hoping it would be near the floor, but ended up on the bloody ceiling.
Declining salary stops the hate, it might turn out to be better than Franz's contract.

Re: Magic Sign G Jalen Suggs to a 5 year, 150.5M Contract Extension
So it is something like 35; 32.5; 29; 28; 26. That would equate to a cap cost of 22.6%; 19.1%; 15.5%; 13.6%; and 11.5%
This is FANTASTIC for the future of the Magic cap.

MasterGMer wrote:The salary cap is going up. After several years of 10% cap increase, 30M might sound like a bargain. Suggs is our heart and soul on defense. Plus he has way more upside than KCP. Good move, Magic!
To articulate, we KNOW what the cap will do at 10% raises each year of his extension.
It is:
2025/26: 154646800
2026/27: 170111480
2027/28: 187122628
2028/29: 205834891
2029/30: 226418380
2031/32: 249060218
For number crunchers, that means the team salary will be (at least) 77% more at the end of Suggs' extension compared to this year.

Love it that they keep structuring contracts like this. They know we won't have capspace soon regardless, so structure the extensions to be descending so as the cap rises and their deals get smaller we'll have a great amount of cap space in a few years to keep trying to make moves and prevent the chances of going into the tax quickly.

Re: Magic Sign G Jalen Suggs to a 5 year, 150.5M Contract Extension
The descending nature is great. It's still a lot of money based on a reasonable projection of his progress. Emotionally, I love it and I could easily see him becoming the clear emotional leader (like a Marcus Smart w/Tatum, Brown) and retire here.
I also think ORL is moving into serious territory...like any realistic contender, the roster is becoming more top-heavy, salary-wise. This is a big year for Mo and Cole, in particular, because good teams CAN'T pay end of the bench guys more than vet mins...the 11th-13th men should become basically irrelevant as the top 7 or 8 dominate the rotation (and the payroll)...the decent, but marginalized guys will have to emerge and jump ahead of others to justify their deals or move out. It's just the way it goes. Young upcoming teams can afford to got 12 deep with prospects and mentors and less than elite specialists...but once those big salaries start going out, there's a bit more urgency to prioritize winning.

It's more about staying below first apron than having money to actually sign anybody who isn't own FA.
Team with two picked team's options is in luxury as soon as next year.

I can assure you the Magic will not pay the luxury tax next season.
The Magic have VERY carefully crafted the salary sheet so that won't happen.
And then next year when Paolo's money spikes, it will be offset by Moe and Gary being off the books. If they REALLY need more space, they can just dump Cole via their team option too.
Plus KCP can opt out if he wants to which would put them way under if that happens. And he'll be gone the year after anyway.

Franz, KCP, Banchero, JI, Cole , Suggs, Carter,Black, Goga, Harris, daSilva, Jett = $175M- guaranteed salary.
Mortiz $11M
Harris $7M
Joseph $3,5M
Houstan $2,8M
Red are team options
+ random 2025 first round pick , let's put him at $2,8 (22th pick ) + if they keep Nuggets pick some random $2,4M
luxury tax : $187 895 000
Everybody can figure rest.
I played yesterday with 2026-27 salary cap but i figured some roster changes will happen so it's far away to be insightful. We know for fact that Banchero's salary will start at $43M , or $51M depending if he can play himself into Derrick Rose rule. Rest is speculation.
