Love this deal.

He showed really great things on both sides last season. A bit like Suggs.

5 years gets you value in those last years.

Suggs was at least a starter for more than 1 year.

While technically true, it's a little disingenuous to ignore the context for both guys. Johnson was the 20th pick in the draft joining a team that was just in the playoffs and then made the playoffs the next 2 seasons as well. They weren't just handing out starting minutes to mid to late round rookies. Suggs was taken 4th by a team that finished with the 3rd worst record in the league and in his rookie year as a starter they finished with the 2nd worst record.

I think both guys have the chance to make those deals look good. They also both could look like bad deals in a few years if there is no further progression, or any regression from last year.

That's totally understandable, provided you adapt the strength of your convictions accordingly. Humility should accompany age.

Curious how much your best and second best players would make in this scenario?

Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Im just saying, Suggs while slightly overpaid, has been a starter since he got in. His shooting didnt progress until this year but was a top defensive guard since day 1. Johnson was a bench role and bad shooter for the first 2 years. He did play great this last year. I think both teams could have let the year play out and discuss in the summer.

I recommend League Pass.

I ain't buying lg pass to see more Hawks games. Their local fans don't even want to watch them play lol OKC and Mavs games selling league pass imo.

As a non-Hawks fan currently living in Atlanta, I can definitely say you're wrong there. It's a huge market, and even when they're not great, people still watch and talk about the team a ton.

If you don't want to watch other teams, or don't care to keep track of the league at large, that's fine, but just say that. :dontknow:

Not really. I'm 44, which is plenty old enough to realize how much I don't know.

Didnt Suggs mostly come off the bench in 22-23 after coming back from injury? But even still, they had different roles and different opportunities because of where those organizations were at in their building process. Orlando was/is young and letting the guys play and figure stuff out. Really until last year, wins and losses didnt matter in the grand scheme of things. Atlanta was actively trying to win games around Trae and make the playoffs. Trying to compare 1 guy started for 2.25 years vs another guy starting 1 just doesn't feel like the correct lens to look through here.

I do tend to agree I think both teams could have let it play until next summer to see 1 more year of growth.

Im a non hawks fan who live in atl too. Definitely ain’t wrong. Fans go to the hawks games to see the other teams play or Boosie. I been to a ton of hawks games. I can see the support In the stands.

Hawks are in a major metro city and perform like a small market team. Hawks have a regional advantage that they don’t have to compete against other large market teams.

Oh, definitely agree to disagree then. Like, I’ve been to a couple games here last year too, and it’s still a majority of Hawks fans at any game, and pretty similar to anywhere. Lakers/Knicks/star games have a lot of fans of those teams and players, but it’s still a majority of Hawks fans by a really good amount most every night. Are you just primarily going to Lakers games here?

This is under 20% of the cap. So if your top-2 guys make 55-60% combined and your 4-5th guys combine for 25% you're around 100% for your top-5 leaving all the room between the cap and tax or whatever apron you're working under for the rest of the roster. If your top 2 are both full 35% max guys then things get tighter but that's the budget issues of having the 2 huge contracts.

The only thing holding JJ back early was injuries...all the way back to his time at Duke. He has turned into a monster. His size, athleticism, dribble, pass, D, transition O, ball D...he does it all. Watch some of last season highlights. Look at preseason. JJ earned more than that bag, but Hawks fans are very happy he took it. He is still a ceiling guy. I see his extension as one of the team best signed

Seems like a contract that isn't going to age well. Obviously a great athlete, but I have very little faith in him long term as a shooter. 69% over 3 years from the line is a pretty big red flag. I've got him as more of a do-it-all glue guy than a future star.

Yeah i think what people don't realize is the fan bases here are quite passionate about the team and we actually do go to the games. The problem is we never show up until after the 1st quarter no matter what sporting event it is XD It will look half full at best at tip off or kickoff and then about 2 to 3 minutes left in the 1st the fans will be about 90% full. I don't know if it's traffic or just to busy to make it there on time but we have been doing this and having this issue for as long as i've been alive lol. It makes us look really bad on television when they are showing the stands at the beginning. But we eventually make it there and during the 4th were really loud.

I rarely go to lakers games. Usually sell those tickets for profit . I’m Season ticket holder.

When i had grizzly season tickets , they had a lot more demand for non major games. You can sit courtside on the floor for 500 hundred dollars at a hawks game this Friday. Wait till tip off and price drops in half.

Grizzlies have a game this Saturday that would at least cost double to be on the floor. Grizzlies also charge more for their nose bleeds section

Are you really comparing a rebuilding teams ticket prices (against the Hornets) against a team that is hoping for a major playoff run (and facing Orlando, a team planning on making the playoffs)?

Also, we were talking about fans wanting to watch and talk about the team and now we’re comparing ticket prices to be inside the stadium? How do ticket prices correlate to fans wanting to subscribe to watch the team on tv?

Are the Hawks rebuilding or just bad? When did the Hawks signal a rebuild? They haven't sold of assets. They traded for Murray. Didn't work. Pivoted from him and re-tooled the team.

Grizz tickets have been consistently been higher for years. Atl also has 5 times the population size of the grizzlies .

Probably only like 4 5 teams in the NBA that are worse at selling tickets than the Hawks. The hornets raptors game in charlotte, the 100 section for the hornets are only slightly cheaper than Atl hawks floor tickets this saturday.

I mean they’re cheap but Hawks were still over 100% capacity last season. They’ve consistently been selling out since theyve had Trae.
