That is fine, but we just saw Murphy average 11 ppg in a playoff series on 48 efg% without Zion. I just don't buy the story that getting rid of McCollum and Ingram all of sudden means Murphy jumps into this larger role. He played 42 mpg and shot 12 fga per game in a series where he had all the opportunity to step up. He doesn't have this super scalable game where more mins or usage means drastic jumps in production especially since he is already 24 yrs old.
Less skilled Harrison Barnes getting 30 mil to stand in the corner is wild.
At least with Sengun, Green or a Kuminga type of player it feels like there is a chance they emerge as a true #1 or #2 option on a good team.
If NO sends Trey to just stand in the corner every night, then yeah, it’ll be a bad contract. I really doubt they do so, though. I think they’re going to look at Treys season performance, and not just one poor playoff series, and feel like they can project a little better performance? Like, I think they probably feel like they can get a rather efficient 20/7-8 out of Trey with a positive impact defensively in the next couple years.
We probably won’t see Trey perform fully until Ingram is elsewhere, though.
20 ppg for a guy that shoots 70% of his fga from three seems unlikely.
I agree about the general statement but want to push back on it specific to Trey. All of this is wit ha caveat that eventually BI will be moved. First off he averaged 18 points a game as a starter in March and April. So he wasn't all that far off of the production of 20 points a game already. Also what was particularly interesting about those last two months was that his free throw rate shot up after all star break relative to his numbers in January and February ( he balled out in to begin the season but that wasn't sustainable).
I don't see him shooting any more threes this year than he has before, but he will playing with more of a true point guard in Murray (and Jose), which should create more open looks. Also, if he continues to improve attacking the rim and drawing fouls 20 points a game is well within his reach. He has been really efficient in the paint, so there are opportunities there.
