I'm just throwing some rumors together and I think this would be something crazy that could really help both teams. Detroit seems to want to flip Dontrelle for some minor leaguers for depth. We have plenty of depth.
Farnsworth, Marquez, Cox and Gardner for Dontrelle Willis.
There were rumors of Leyland being interested in Farnsworth and since their bullpen is Todd Jones, they have never had a bigger need for him. The Yankees can pick up a million or two of his deal to make him look a little more attractive. Marquez, Cox and Gardner help them refill a little depth in the minor leagues to make another move or for help with injuries. We might have to include another minor leaguer to make it happen or swap out one guy for someone a little better.
For the Yankees this makes a lot of sense. It's a buy-low kind of move. Dontrelle's value has never been lower. There are plenty who speculated that Willis doesn't perform because he isn't in a winning environment, a winning environment is what the Yankees represent. He is only 25, so there is no reason to think he can't be fixed. The Yankee pitching braintrust, one of the best in the league, can get together and fix him. Eiland, Nardi, Mo, Pettitte, and Girardi can all get together and use their particular talents to fix him. Nardi has fixed countless pitchers in our system and changed their delivery. Mo took Vizcaino under his wing and worked some wonders. Mo has spoken before how he wants to help younger pitchers. Then he has Pettitte to keep him honest in the season and work out with. If Willis has an ego problem, he will have to defer to Pettitte and Mo. Girardi knows him from his Marlins days.
Another simple aspect to look at, Dontrelle's splits against lefties are very good. In the past 3 years he has only allowed 4 home runs to lefty hitters, and a .197 BAA. Last year, no XBH from left handers and only a .123 BAA. We would have plenty of starters, I would put Willis in the bullpen as the setup man. His numbers against lefties are phenomenal and he can just blow people by. Obviously, he can spot start if guys innings become an issue. Then the year after in '09 we may or may not have Pettitte and Moose is gone. He can go back into the starting rotation. Thoughts? -Jitpal

i like it. Girardi can get the best outta Willis.
when u say cox are we talkin J.Brent Cox? or is it someone else?
Id flip Farnsworht, Brett Gardner, and Kevin Whelan. i think thats a fair flip... if it J. Brent Cox i dont think we need to flip him. id like to keep marquez cause i think he can be a good reliever for years to come or a good 4th starter for our roster. but id flip him for DWillis if i must

plus, i think omar would beat us to get him and might even be willing to give up a lil more
Even as a Mets fan I would be weary of Willis
The Marlins tried to change his mechanics and delivery. His velocity decreased to 89-91 last year on his FB. Unless the Yanks think they can fix him I would stay away from him with a 10 foot pole in the AL.. especially the AL east.

So Detroit; who has a better lineup and an equal pitching staff (with Dontrelle) is not a winning environment, but NY is?
Dontrelle Willis is not a throw in to the Miguel Cabrera deal....Detroit obviously wanted him and thats why they gave up everything for those 2. I think Ian Kennedy would be the minimum that Detroit would ask for.....

I'm not saying you stick him into the rotation on day one Kandi. I'm saying you put him in the bullpen. Get him into ST and make it Nardi's job on Feb. 14th to fix him. Nardi can fix anyone. Use him out of the pen to set up or for spot starts. The guy has a ton of talent, if anyone can harness it is the group of guys that we have. We have the vets for him to look up to, we have the coaches to fix him and we have the manager who knows him. -Jitpal

I'm not saying Detroit isn't a winning environment because Leyland has changed the culture there but the Yankees for the past decade have been the model of consistent winning. I don't think they have a better lineup but that isn't the point of this discussion. They seem to be wanting to flip him to the Mets for bullpen depth, why not flip to the Yankees? I don't think they could ask for Kennedy because Dontrelle's value is pretty low right now and they have no farm anymore. They want quantity not just one bull-chipper. 3-4 B-level guys, which is better than what the Mets would offer, should get it done. -Jitpal

Just because its a rumor doesnt mean it would get done. I mean there are rumors of the mets going after Santana, but they dont have what it takes to get him without giving up Reyes.
Willis is a 200 inning horse who is a #3 starter at worst. He may have had a bad season but is 2 years from a season where he won 22 games. Kennedy is a #5 guy and has the potential to be a #3 pitcher. After the Tigers paid such a big price to get him, Kyle Farnswort isnt gonna be enough....

I think D-Railed is the better name. It is also appropriate since he is now in the AL & will get lit up.

This actually makes a lot of sense. It isn't like the Tigers have big hole in the rotation, their bullpen is a circus and Farnsworth isn't even expensive when you look at what guys are getting FA.
I am suspect of Willis in the AL but I think it is safe to say he would be better than Igawa and Mussina. I don't know how much it would be worth adding to the package to make it work but maybe they would be into getting Hernandez back now that they kind of blew out their system.
