not only that it as also the best team in the NBA on there ring ceremony...it wasn't an ideal night for us.

Needless to say the defensive scheme and effort need to be better.

Looking back at the replay of this game now, the defensive lineups are all weird, we somehow matched up
OG against brown
hart on white
Brunson on holiday
Mikal on Tatum
KAT was the only defensive assignment that was correct, covering Horford.

It just doesn’t make sense:
OG is the defender that should be on Tatum
mikal on brown
Hart should be guarding holiday,
Brunson on white
OR drop hart to the bench and have Deuce play Holiday on defense in the starting lineup

These matchups matter because now if they switch the pick and roll, with Tatum will be isolating on Brunson, OG would therefore be switched on to white, but this means hart and mikal can help, this means everyone has to rotate. Im sure this will come with time

Looking At the highlights of last year’s game where we beat the Celtics 6 months ago,
OG guarded tatum
Donte on white
Brunson on holiday
Ihart on KP
Hart on brown….
We won this game because Tatum was essentially eliminated as an offensive threat

In the game that we lost on opening night a season ago, grimes was the primary defender on Tatum and Brunson played holiday…

Either way, I still think OG plays Tatum. There’s no way he should be on brown, when Tatum is the greater threat from 3

I mentioned in the GT that the “rotations” were weird and asked why OG was on Brown and Mikal on Tatum. That made no sense to me.

In that scenario are you committing to Randle long term as the go to #2 option? With his contract looming it would be very risky IMO. For one year that probably would have matched a lot of what we produced last year but I thin it would have a very limited upside.

Sure but the upside is you get a true Thibs big where we're kind of at a loss now. Conceded, there are risks here, as there were with the direction we went, and we don't even know if CLE will play ball so, again, it's not one where I want to go too deep down the rabbit hole of regret.

fair...I will just say if thibs is a great coach he should be able to adjust to his personnel. He may prefer a drop coverage big but we currently don't have that. We have a more switchable team and we didn't use that at all vs BOS...

The ultimate irony of this early season is we are perhaps playing the two best teams in exposing your defensive system if your system is not sound (or has not come together yet). Kinda interested to see does Thibs remain stubborn with too much drop coverage stuff or does he make some adjustments for this next game. Players need to be sticking their man better from 3 plain and simple.

With Mitchell Robinson Knicks can safley funnel the opponent towards the rim. He intimidates and sets the tone on the offensive/defensive boards. OG and Mikal will be maximized as wing defenders when there is high level rim protection. It's easy to admit the Knicks missed Mitch last night on the offensive boards and protecting the rim. Hartenstein, too.

We were 0-3 with Mitch starting last year against the Celtics, he averaged 5ppg 6rpg against them and there is nobody to funnel to the rim because KP is standing 26 feet from the rim. He was thoroughly out played by KP last season and was -26 in those games, you guys really need to understand what the Celtics do, how they score and how they defend against rim runners, their entire scheme is to expose players like Mitch.


He's not the answer vs that team, the Mavs bigs were pretty much useless against them in the finals as well.

Yeah and it doesn’t work because he’s still going to be in drop coverage because he can’t guard the perimeter either so Cs game plan doesn’t change at all. They are bombing away 3s and nothing Mitchell Robinson can do about it

Good medicine/insight/truth for me. On the other end, offensive rebounding was a major strength of the team last season. I thought the Celtics running up a quick lead wouldn't have happened if the bricked shots led to more 2nd chance opportunities. Offensive rebounding and rim protection (albeit the Celtics) are major adjustments to figure out.

Yeah good point and I did notice that but it’s not like they had a rebounding machine out there, they just gang rebound. I don’t think needed Mitchell Robinson, what they need is to establish roles within themselves. Guys like Bridges and OG will have to help gang rebound, Brunson too. Celtics have that identity established they know their roles and know what their identity is. Knicks now need to work on that and establish their identity and guys will need to understand what is expected of them. If they want to play 5 out offense with one floor spacing big then they will have to gang rebound as a unit as well

Celtics were shooting 60% from 3 until garbage time when the subs missed like 20 in a row to finish the game and fall short of the made 3 record.

The Knicks as a team shot 55% last night (43/78) while Boston shot 48/95 (50%). The difference in the game was Boston shot 29/61 (48% lol) from 3 while we shot 11/30 (solid 37%). 65% of Boston's FGA were 3s which is unheard of. At one point both teams were trading baskets but Boston kept shooting 3s while New York was shooting 2s and the lead kept ballooning. If you're playing Boston, you need to defend the 3ball and NY is terrible at defending the 3

and that 48% wasn't even indicative of there actual shooting from 3. I think they probably missed there last 10 3's with there backups were in. They were shooting 60% from 3 on ridiculous volume for a good part of 3 qtrs.

Mazzula doesn't get enough credit for how decisive, aggressive and radical he is with his coaching. He plays the numbers game because he assumes regression to the mean will favor him.

I sensed he was gonna be a great one when a reporter questioned the number of 3s attempted after his first series loss his first year in charge and he didn't budge.

Think of D'Antoni expressing regret over not taking more 3s in Phoenix, even as he was questioned for it at the time. Mazzula's been like F it I'm not living to have those regrets.

Bright mind. Like a reverse Spoelstra but brilliant as well.

Offense is not going to be our issue. Figuring out the best defensive system will be the struggle early on. It may happen quickly or it might take around 20 games. We shall see.
