Putting my public school education to good use, just did this quick stat:

Total innings pitched (major, minors and postseason) in 2007
Ian Kennedy 165.1
Joba Chamberlain 116
Phil Hughes 115.2

This perhaps sheds a little light on why the Yankees were so interested in hanging on to Kennedy. Unless they abandon all common sense, Chamberlain won

I don't think this is a new take. It has been discussed before that of the 3, he is most likely to pitch all season long or at least most of it. The other two really shouldn't go beyond 150-160. -Jitpal

Yeah, Abraham didn't stumble onto anything new here. The Yankees have been more or less expecting a full season from Kennedy. Any hypothetical Hughes/Kennedy deal for Santana would have put Mussina in as the full-time #5 starter and meant that Igawa/a AAAA pitcher would be left to mop up the starts Joba couldn't pitch. And if Pettitte retired or somebody got injured during the season, it would have left the bottom of the rotation looking a little nasty.

Having six starters around gives the team some cushion, keeps them from overusing Hughes and Joba, and even lets them get a little creative with the rotation if they want to.
