2024-25 NBA MVP Discussion Thread

Post#1 » by bisme37 » Mon Oct 28, 2024 4:31 pm

Hey good homies!

Spoiler:
I've had our yearly MVP thread on my mind but I really wasn't enthused to make it if I'm being honest. Didn't know who to put in the poll so early in the year without y'all yelling at me about it haha.

So here's the thread, but as a poster just suggested, I'll hold off on a poll until we get a better handle on who should be in it. Otherwise I'll be changing it every few days and it won't make any sense.

Nov 5: The poll is up! It's really hard to make an MVP poll without people getting mad that their guy is not in it, but let me know if the season goes on and it becomes clear the options should change.

It's set up so you can change your vote as players jockey for position.

Anyway... here's the MVP Discussion thread! Please enjoy the discussion.

Way too early thoughts on MVP: AD is playing at an MVP level, but I feel like we see this pretty often ... And then Day to Davis returns. But I will say, JJ's AD centric offense is fun to watch and might be the best position AD has been in to achieve personal accolades.

It's hard to imagine with such a deeply stacked team that Tatum could make a serious run at MVP, but his new shot style is filthy. It's quicker and is going in A LOT. Sample size sucks, but he's taking 4 more 3's per game and is hitting them at almost 50% right now. considering the volume that's crazy for Tatum.

Yeah I'm loving JT's new shot. It's quicker, more arc, and the main difference I'm seeing is the dip is gone. Last season he'd catch the ball at his chest but then dip it down to his waist before coming back up and releasing. That's too many moving parts to stay consistent with your form, and gave the defender time to contest since it was a slower process.

Now he just catches and goes right up with it. You can tell he really trusts it now and he's dripping with confidence and it's leveled up his whole game.

Agreed 100%, that dip down motion is what I always noticed, it made his overall shot composition look slow and unnatural. A scary team gets even scarier.

AD, Tatum, Shai/Chet deserve to be at the top right now.

I don't see AD hanging with them. JJ's playing him nearly 38 mpg, and despite entering the season in great shape, we have a large enough sample size of his career to know he's going to slow down either due to nicks and knacks or a more length injury.

Right now I'd have Tatum as #1.

He's putting up stats and he just won a ring.

I have to say that Tatum winning MVP this year would be one heck of a revenge tour.

I'm here for that.

Only 4 international players in the top 15, that caught my eye.

AD's also had three home games. I think his production is more inconsistent on the road. I would love for him to keep this up but I just cant' see it. If you decide MVP after three games he's definitely in the lead though. his defense is so far ahead of the other guys its not even close overall.

I don't see AD sustaining this for the entire year but given the 3 game sample that we have, he should be the runaway favourite. Unlike his contemporaries, the Lakers are undefeated against 3 playoff caliber teams in Minny, Phoenix and Sacramento.

His numbers are out flat ridiculous (34pts, 11reb, 3.3ast, 1.7stl, 2.3blk on 67.3%TS) but he's also asserted himself as the focal point over Bron in JJ's offense (29.9%USG vs 27%). He's been aggressive attacking the paint and his 18.7 FGA is a Lakers career high and the 15FTA is more than double his career average.

AD has probably been better, if we're honest, and his team is also 3-0.

Way too early, obviously, but thus far it's Tatum, AD and SGA in some order. I can see all of them remaining in contention until the end, too – health permitting (which is a concern for AD in particular).

Wemby's ranked #8 on one of those charts, well I am hoping he catches up.

Ok, who else is on? Luka, Tatum, Embiid?

He's not gonna win it this season but Banchero has entered the convo especially if he keeps this performance up.
