December 15th: Trae Young to the Magic

Post#1 » by NYG » Tue Oct 29, 2024 1:32 am

Atlanta Hawks get:
Anthony Black
Jett Howard
Michael Porter Jr.
Cole Anthony
2025 Orlando Magic Unprotected First Round Draft Pick
2027 Orlando Magic Unprotected First Round Draft Pick
2029 Orlando Magic Unprotected First Round Draft Pick
2031 Orlando Magic Unprotected First Round Draft Pick

Denver Nuggets get:
De'Andre Hunter
Gary Harris
Caleb Houstan

Orlando Magic get:
Trae Young

-Hawks complete their rebuild by adding a ton of picks and youth.
-Nuggets turn MPJ into multiple veteran depth pieces.
-Magic consolidate into a legit star in their back-court.

I personally have this as an overpay by Orlando, Denver getting hosed, and ATL making out like bandits. I just don't see Trae as the guy who will lead Orlando to the promised land, especially at that cost. On top of that they get out of Hunter's money. For me, getting MPJ and Anthony Black, while off-loading Hunter, already has considerable value in itself. Jett Howard also isn't nothing. Then you want 4 unprotected 1sts on top of that? Seems a little steep. Maybe 2 unprotected and 1 lightly protected, I could see? Denver would also be bumping AG up a rung scoring-wise after this trade, I would think. And AG seemed to flourish more as an afterthought while defenses focused more on Jokic/Murray/MPJ. Just how I see it, anyway...

I don't like the fit of Trae on the Magic. He's shown he's at his most effective with the ball in his hands (obviously) and he would have to share with Paolo and Franz. Too many ball dominant guys. Plus, Paolo seems to be taking a leap, I don't want the ball to be out of his hands too much. Let him cook.

4 unprotected firsts + 2 recent lottery picks for Trae Young? He's nowhere near the player some guys think he is.

Easy pass for Orlando. Trae would mess up the chemistry with Orlando and create a defensive hole

This is about 5 picks too heavy for Trae

LOL

Trae is a fun player, but unfortunately doesn’t fit on this current iteration of the Magic.

I also truly think Black > Young for the role he’s currently being asked to play.

Similar to KAT, a lot of people are going to be surprised at the value Young brings back in a trade.

Trae doesn't help Orlando with what they are trying to do.

Taking the ball out of Paolo and Franz' hands at the expense of multiple prospects and picks isn't a great idea. Trae is a great player, but he's a volume scorer and defensive sieve.

They need guards to put defensive pressure on opposing back courts, which is why they signed KCP and paired him with Suggs. AB fits that mold closer as a plus defender. He just needs to get better playmaking.

Yeah wild statement. KAT has also missed a ton of games last few seasons. (much more than Trae) Guaranteed that factors in why he didn’t get as much.

If Trae is on the block, Houston would bid.

Just the facts, Hawks 212 wins and 259 losses in Trae Young's 6+ years in Atlanta.

I mean you realize Hawks tanked in his first 2 years and let’s see… how many age 26 or under #1 options have 3 playoff appearances and CF under their belt. Not that many.

Trae is like using fireworks to heat your house. He brings lots of sparkle and light, but doesn't increase the level of heat.

MPJ has some value that shouldn't be salary filler for Atlanta, and that's where you can create value for them while reducing what Orlando has to pay. Maybe he's only neutral salary or even a little below, but you could find worse salary out there and grab draft capital-- DLo/Vincent/X from LAL? Brooks + Steven Adams from HOU? Collins+ from UTA? Smart+ from MEM?

Thanks for providing a little more nuance.

If Paolo were a better defender, I think the Magic might have the personnel to cover for Trae's defensive liabilities. (He's a decent iso defender but cuts/screens are like an unsolvable riddle for him).

I agree that the Magic don't need an elite playmaker if it comes at a great cost in other areas. Black seems to be coming along nicely, if ORL can be patient that long.
