One thing in JK's defense. Last year many of his most successful minutes were with Podz. This season I don't know if they have been on the court together at all. Perhaps part of a Kerr masterplan to get JK to accept a high minute bench role.CDM_Stats wrote:Twinkie defense wrote:According to RealGM, Philly and Brooklyn are interested in Kuminga. The window for trading him for value is closed... only trade him if he's a definite detriment to the team. And I mean with a dataset that goes through December, at least. This roster is different than last years.. frankly of the guys on a rookie contract, he's not the one I'm most worried about

Re: Kuminga and moody extensions
JK has sucked so far in two games, but we’ve seen him play better than this. He reminds me of Harrison Banes in a way: a lot of athletic talent, a desire (i think, this is subjective) to play the right way, but without the ability to process the game fast enough.
Not declaring him a lost cauSe though. Obviously this is an important season for him. If he hasnt made a step forward in the second half, the problem will take care of itself in restricted free agency.

KJ Martin and picks from the Sixers (which was mentioned in the article) doesn't move me at all...
However, if the fit with Kuminga continues to be a bit off as the season progresses, I'd definitely be interested in Noah Clowney from the Nets (plus a pick or two)... Also, we are pretty light on actual PGs, so if we ran into any injury troubles, could add Denis coming our way while adding either GP2 or Loon heading to the Nets.
I'm a Kuminga fan, but Denis and Clowney could definitely fit a need if the 3/4 positions are being more productive with non-Kuminga guys on our roster.
Welp, that Nets scenario I mentioned has a real life example of what I was talking about... obviously only 3 games in, but Steph banged up, Podz/Melton not lighting the world on fire, Kuminga hasn't found his fit....
Kuminga/GP2 for Schroder/Clowney/2025 Rockets pick/2027 Suns pick (probably only get 1 of those pick at best)

Re: Kuminga and moody extensions
Warriors may be caught in a classic bad situation. Looking to maybe trade a player, have to play him to showcase his talents, but he's not playing well (partly his fault, partly the fault of the system/lineup he plays in not catering to his strengths), which means it just keeps getting worse and worse.
Now that said, I think Kuminga will have a good stretch somewhere because this is not the first time he's started off poorly and gotten it together, but when that is, and if Kerr keeps the same lineups through it, I don't know. Send him to the bench. That helps him play more of an energizer role and removes him from Kerr's unfavorable starting lineup (good for him, also good for the team).
If he starts hitting 3s consistently it opens up a lot more options for him but he hasn't shown the ability to be consistent on his 3 ball for more than a month or two during the season. To some extent, it's built into the Warriors system to take an open 3 if you have it, but I have not been pleased with him lately in that regard. If you go 0-2, you can live with that, but if you go 1-6 that's a huge problem.
If he's not shooting the 3 well, and he's not drawing and making free throws, and he's not rebounding, and he's not a lock-down defender, you really can't play him much. It's only 3 games, but he needs to get it together fast. If he plays like this all year and is still asking for $40M+, he may wish he had made a deal earlier.

TJDrins... not as much his fault as how he's being used. He's an average-ish rim-runner that isn't very intuitive, and he's frequently paired with defensive/bad-spacing units so he can be a lob threat. Worst part is, his free metrics look positive so he's going to get a lot of fan support and maybe even coach support. Should be a backup but instead is starting with an awful starting unit

Have you seen anything that might suggest this starting group is the way to go? Kerr and the coaching staff have to see something..right?
I'm also seeing podz getting stuck on rotations defensively, but he gets forgiven by everyone because he takes charges.

Nope.. my guess is that its an attempt to humor JK at the 3. The problem is, like with most things re: development, Kerr is choosing poorly. Pairing TJD/Kuminga is an awful idea, because its 2 bad positional defenders, and it closes one of JK's avenues to scoring - the lobs. Well not closed, but hinders it. TJD needs to occupy that space to hold his weight offensively (although he's been the biggest benefactor in terms of gimme ORebs/putbacks so far).. but JK needs those lanes when his perimeter game isn't working, which should be the default assumption
Podz.. yeah its not looking very good. Looks like the exact same player as last year on both sides. He got 25 minutes last night because of Steph being hurt, but it really highlighted how he's not a PG and we dont seem to have a single primary handler that we can count on to create offense consistently. Defensively he tries to help too much, and his double teams arent very effective because of his height/wingspan. He needs to hedge and recover, not hedge then commit

With Steph and Melton out, Podz is going to have to show his All-Star upside.

Re: Kuminga and moody extensions
Kuminga gave up an offensive rebound on a FT attempt in the waning minutes of the second game vs. NO.
He just has low awareness at times.
On another play, he just stood flatfooted, just outside the lane while Podz went to get the defensive rebound. He may have been guarding Zion at the time, had his back to the basket.
Kind of low motor or just little desire to get the board. You would think in a contract year, he'd try to boost his numbers.

What a total cop out, real talent just needs to be on the court to make a positive impact.
If he can’t affect winning basketball unless he’s surrounded by specific players then we shouldn’t be paying him much on his contract extension.

My point is that he had more time at the 4 than in the other games. Playing him at the 3 doesn't work as well, I literally meant position, not players. He may not be a fit here long term but hopefully we continue to put him in the right position.

The Podz/Waters/Moody combo. Teams can’t handle it. Solid gold.

Now I'm thinking Steph/Moody/Waters/Wiggins/Draymond lineups

Bingo. By the way some folks make it out to sound, Kerr is supposed to be out on the court, holding the player's hand, directing him what to do.
