That said, he isn't worth this anymore.

Miami In: Adams, Brooks, Eason, Whitmore, Picks?

Rockets in: Butler, Richardson

Pistons in: Tate + 2nd(s)

That said I like Eason + Whitmore a lot. I wouldn't mind being Miami starting with those 2 + Jovic/Jaime + Bam. Good group to grow with while they move the guards to open up cap space and attract a star.

The Heat did not, in fact, just give Butler an extension and Butler's contract expectations, when he'll be 36 next season, are a huge issue as far as his trade value is concerned. Now, I don't think it's a forgone conclusion that he'll opt out next summer. If he's serious about getting his bag and playing for a bad Nets team it remains a possibility. Color me skeptical. Also, it remains to be seen if the Brooklyn FO will be willing to take that risk if Jimmy is the only significant player they can add.

If he opts in, that would leave all of Robinson, Rozier, and Jimmy coming off the books in 26. That's likely the best outcome for the Heat. I just don't buy that they'll be all that competitive in the current iteration of the East.
With the exception of the last line that's how I see it, too. I just don't think anyone wants to give us what he's worth to us and the potential reward of keeping him this year is too big not to keep him based on the return in trade.

As to the last line, I don't see is as having a great regular season record, but if we get to the playoffs we could indeed make things really tough on other teams. It's not like we couldn't make another run

Eason has been a clear rotation player for a team trying to make the playoffs. If he's a borderline NBA talent then so is someone like Jovic. Whitmore was drafted 20th last year and probably outplayed his draft spot. It's not clear if he'll be a long-term rotation player on good teams but that's just something inherent to most young players.

Not being high on Amen is fair enough but it should be acknowledged that he holds quite a bit of value. And ‘middling first’ is also not how I would describe an unprotected pick in three years from a team whose trajectory is still very much uncertain. While the pick might end up being ‘middling’, it might also end up being a high lottery pick. Teams covet unprotected picks because of that chance and that's why the offered pick adds significant value to the proposal (note that Miami could also use it in a trade down the line if they themselves do not value the pick as much). Tate seems to be washing out, so I'll give you that one.

So yeah, you may not like the trade package and that's your prerogative, as is preferring one season of Butler over this package (a sentiment I don't quite understand but to each their own). But let's just acknowledge that from an outside perspective, Miami would be lucky to be offered this much for the current version of Butler and considering his current contract status, and that it's Houston overpaying here.

Cute, but it completely ignores everything we know about Pat Riley and the Miami Heat. You cannot possibly think that we're going to trade for a rebuilding package. We'd be more likely to pitch in more and try and get another franchise cornerstone.

This isn't a lucky package, this is eternal mediocrity.

I would gladly take another year of pushing for the Finals rather than consigning ourselves to the 10th pick for the foreseeable future...

A lot easier said than done. What are the odds that another franchise cornerstone is going to get traded by the deadline this year? What are the odds that Miami has the highest offer? An 35yo expiring Jimmy might fetch 25% of needed assets needed for a superstar, Miami doesn't really have the assets to outbid several teams. A Jimmy trade if there is one is very likely not going to result in Miami landing a franchise cornerstone.

You're misunderstanding me. I'm not saying we're going to get the guy this year, I'm saying that we'll take our chances. If we don't, so be it, but at least this year we have a chance not to suck.

Dame to Houston makes a lot more sense to me, esp as his trade value has never been lower and is still contracted.
