Reminder to some of you. We arent trading a 1st with the draft in GB next year.

Hopefully this is just a prelude to a trade for a better pass rusher

I know fans hate it, but it's a smart organization and dumping $20+ million of future money when we have a young team is a smart move.

Reminder that this is obviously nonsense. Trades out of the first round are rare anyway, but I have zero doubt that where the draft is held has any influence on the job Gute is doing.

If we had a top pick it could make sense, but a late 1st doesn't.

Unloading Preston Smith and adding nobody is a very expected Packers deadline.

Preston was awesome when he was here, but writing was on the wall. Older vet with minimal impact this year in a new scheme with a bunch of young edges needing reps. I could see where some people think it's a loss, but getting experience for the young guys is important.

Re: Packers News, Transactions - Preston Smith to Pit for a 7th
Very Packers ish move and I love it.
Smith is underperforming his contract and would have been cut in the off-season. We have guys to play there now.
I figure this money goes to Zach Tom in a contract extension this off-season, so I make that trade all day every day.
If you don't appreciate this move - take a look at the Saints salary cap picture for next year. After doing this, drive down to Lambeau, get on your knees, and thank / service the Gute for this roster we have, it's outstanding.

Re: Packers News, Transactions - Preston Smith to Pit for a 7th
We save some money next year (about $3.5 million) with this deal . But we would have saved the same amount by releasing him after the season. His cap hit for next year is $13.5 million. Steelers will either release him or re-do his contract (runs through 2026).
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

If we were gonna save the same money either way by releasing him in the offseason, I don't understand this move at all. We really just needed another 7th round pick huh?

Are we stuck with who we have now or is there another way we can add a piece.. are there buyouts or other waivers teams do? I can't remember.. think still we need 1 more WR that fights for the ball or we're a 2nd round exit

Re: Packers News, Transactions - Preston Smith to Pit for a 7th
See how petty Gutz is about these draft picks? We sent out a 7th for Malik.. now he got it back and we have a pick in every round again and his life is complete again.
I imagine him calling every team.. come in guys i need a 7th.. who do you want.. anyone except Love is on the table lol

A 7th rounder is a crapshoot, but it's not completely nothing. Gute has found some talent in recent drafts in that last round, so it just gives him another dart to throw at the board and for a guy who was going to be cut anyways.

Re: Packers News, Transactions - Preston Smith to Pit for a 7th
I get it from a strictly asset-management perspective. You get a 7th rounder and get some cap savings in exchange for a fading vet. It definitely doesn't help short-term, and Smith was a locker room leader, but this is the kind of move I'd expect a GM to make.
I'm sure that Gute was exploring the market. But I feel quite strongly that this is the time to add high quality talent. Our cap situation looks quite good for the next few years. Yes, we're going to have to hand out some extensions. But we're in the sweet spot where the team is talented and full of enough guys on rookie deals that we can justify making a splash on a Crosby, Garrett, Lattimore, etc.

Maybe he didn't like the odds for this season, but is preparing for something like this next season. I mean, Love is kind of injured, Jaire, etc.
