Reading the old Gradey Dick threads is pretty amusing
The same old posters with the worst takes overreacting while the same old posters with the reasonable takes telling them to just be patient.
The worst take posters are now radio silent, never willing to eat crow.

Yeah sometimes I wonder what their intentions are. I think some just need to take shots at Masai every chance they get so Gradey was an easy target this time last year. It’s funny the players that were so hyped up last year that Masai supposedly missed out on. I haven’t heard Whitmore or George’s name once all year.
I think most people that are in favour of tanking are actually the ones that are most incapable of enduring it. Rebuilding is going to have ups and downs and young players are going to struggle. If people aren’t willing to go through that then this team isn’t right for them.

Was an absolute steal of a pick from Masai who continues to prove he's probably the best at drafting in the league. He consistently manages to get all-star / near all-star level talents outside of the top 10 of the draft.

George had a nice 33 point game night the other day. But is slashing 32/23/79. Yikes.
I've seen two rockets games this year. Whitmore still has drool worthy moments but he's not the smartest player.
Podz was a fantasy target of mine this year but he's struggling to shoot too.
All way too early for all of them, who knows.

I was there to throw water on the Bufkin hype train. Draftniks will always overrate self-shot creators and turn them into Kyrie before they play a minute.
To be fair, Gradey was so bad last year that he was in a statistically difficult to recover from position. He's special.

Agreed. I like Podz but don’t see a ton of upside there. With Whitmore and George, I just didn’t see players that can contribute heavily to winning basketball. I don’t really like that style and don’t believe it’s conducive to winning.

Re: The Gradey Dick Thread Part 3
Tbh, his performances to start his career as well as his inability to be efficient even at the g league level were concerning.
These performances now are definitely a welcome surprise. The only thing slightly concerning is for some reason he has a tendency to miss the automatic wide open 3s you’d expect him to make. Other than that he has been great offensively. The thing is when everyone else gets back and his role is a little more limited, he absolutely has to be automatic on catch and shoot 3s.

44% on wide open 3s isn't a tendency to miss or anything to be worried about with his volume. If that held up for the season he would be among the best wide open 3 point shooters in the league. I get it, when we see a shooter miss an open shot it messes with our expectations. Sometimes the emotional memories don't add up. Just check the numbers every now and again to see if they match what you feel.

From GB:

Dick showing much more ball handling, screen splitting and crashing than Klay. Klay was another tier of defender but Dick has been putting in much more effort as of late.

I think him clanking a few of his wide open threes is throwing people off. Like some of his worst misses are wide open.

I think some of the concern was at least reasonable, the story around him was that he was a 3pt shooter, and he couldn't shoot 3s. But people declaring him a bust less than 2 months into his NBA career were off their rockers. I've preached patience for him and Darko since day one, and it seems like those are looking to be coming along in lockstep.

Props TZ!

Lol and in the moment they will tell you you’re unrealistic delusional on and the ones being rational lol. People on this board have no patience and think anyone 24 and up is a finished product lol. But then they want to tank and rebuild. I will never get it

Disagree. During the portion of the season where people were writing him off as "bust" (Oct-Dec) Dick took 68 total FGA.
The difference between "Dick is a massive bust (29% fg)" and "Dick is ok (40% fg)" was 7 made field goals. It was such a ridiculously small sample size that people were massively overreacting to. By mid-Feb Dick had already climbed out the hole he had dug as far as being a "bust" was concerned (up to 40/36/92 shooting splits for the entire season at that point).

I honestly think he has closer potential some time in the future, which is going to relied upon if he can self create, but in the dying seconds of a game who else on the team would you rather take the final shot?
His weakness is as a finisher, but outside that he's pretty much a threat everywhere else. And you can't exactly foul him either.

Exactly. concern was totally reasonable. people calling him a bust after just 68 shots was... not.

This current crop of rookies look all bad at adjusting to the NBA 3, even Sheppard. I guess looking at Tre Johnson shooting from NBA range is a good sign.

You can absolutely foul him in the dying seconds of a game because that's when it's least likely to be called. A closer needs to be able to self create and handle contact.
