Our inability to hit on anything from mid/late frps to srps to udfas is what separates us and a team like Memphis who are constantly churning out upside players worthy of stealing minutes. That's how you build depth organically.
They drafted Wells 20 picks after McCain and he's getting 1st half minutes. Jay Huff is in the rotation. Laravia/Aldama/Pippen Jr/GG Jackson etc
I thought once Morey took over we'd head in that direction, Joe/Reed/Shake were some decent swings - but none of them besides Reed really stuck around.
That was the formula for Toronto leading up to 2019 with FVV/Siakam/Powell/Delon/OG all drafted and developed.
Boston is constantly chopping and changing and increasing the value of players found along the margins to eventually swing them to make bigger moves. Langford/Nesmith didn't work, they found Kornet/Hauser, developed Pritchard, picked up Queta and now he's logging them 20+ solid minutes a game.
Our pro-scouting has been abysmal and it seems old unathletic guys get priority here.
You need more talented players around Jojo than most stars, given his availability. His team should be able to operate with two distinct rotations and schemes, which also forces a top heavy roster construction. And man.. it would take seasons to build a chemistry that can beat chemistry of the top teams like the Celts who are very familiar with each other.
Sometimes I wonder if Nurse and Morey knows what they signed up to.
If we add more shooting, we sacrifice defense. If we add defense, we sacrifice shooting. And if we prioritize top heavy talent, we lose two way depth. On paper, this squad seems well-balanced, but we’ve been hit by bad luck: Jojo missing games, Paul George missing games, Maxey in a shooting slump, and poor shooting from Caleb and Oubre, all at the same time.
Winning a championship alone is hard. And it’s much harder with the cards were dealt with.
There’s never been a time in history when we look back and say that the people who were censoring free speech were the good guys.
