DEN adds Second Serb w/ATL

Post#1 » by jredsaz » Thu Nov 7, 2024 6:20 am

Nuggets receive DeAndre Hunter, Brogdon Bogdanovic

Hawks receive Michael Porter Jr, Julian Strawther, Vlatko Cancar

Denver turns one rotation piece into two adding needed depth. Joker and Bogi have the Serbian connection and Hunter in the MPJ role is intriguing. Nuggets stay under the second apron.

Atlanta consolidates salary for a sharp shooter with championship experience. Porter is the same age as Young and under control for the same three years. Porter has proven he can play well off of star players. Hawks remain out of the tax.

Doesn't work for Atlanta. They don't need MPJ with Jalen Johnson and Risacher on the team.

And you wouldn't want to block Risacher development.

I actually do like Hunter & Bogdan in Denver. I think all 3 could use a change of scenery. If you can find a third team to take MPJ and give better fitting players to ATL cool. The problem is I don’t think teams in the East need him. Except maybe Brooklyn but would they want to use their cap space on him?

What do they need? Serious question.

Does playing MPJ for 30 minutes/game stunt Risacher's or anyone else's development anymore than playing Hunter 30 minute per game does? IDK, that aspect of it seems a wash to me.

I just don't think it's good value. It's too much extra money to take on.

A shot creator for when Trae is on the bench, perimeter shooting, depth behind Zacch & Jalen, and a starting-quality big man.

Dang, how many lightskints does ATL need?

All jokes aside, I think that Risacher, Johnson and (whenever he's healthy) Hunter are enough to cover the minutes at the 3 and 4 for the Hawks. MPJ would be surplus to requirements. Also, Porter's back injury history is going to frighten a few teams that might otherwise consider trading for him. He has strung together 2 healthy seasons, and I wish him the best, but back injuries often recur.

Hunter is done as an NBA starter. His knees are shot. He can't handle minutes. For the rest of his career he will be a 15-20 minute player off the bench and will still consistently miss games due to knee injury/maintainenace.

Hawks will try and dump him like they did with John Collins

The deal is pretty much a wash financially over the next three seasons.

I’m not sure where that money is coming from. Over the next three seasons Hunter and Bogdanovic make $118M and MPJ makes $114M. Maybe I’m missing an option or something.

I mean MPJ fills two of those needs: elite perimeter shooting and wing depth. Risacher looks great but brining in a championship caliber rotation guy should only help him develop. Competition is good and there are still plenty of minutes to go around.

You're missing the obvious: MPJ isn't the difference-maker to the Hawks that this trade suggests.

And, in that case, two rotation players> one.

Bogdan's 3rd year is a club option.

I know this board absolutely hates Porter but this is a pretty crap return for Denver. Neither one of these guys offers nearly the upside of MPJ.

OP must not be paying attention because they would be trading two rotation pieces, not one. Strawther has become an important part of the rotation and will put up numbers comparable to Bogdanovic going forward at a fraction of the cost.

Agreed. This would be a very bad idea for Denver.
