OG played more defense on Lillard in two plays than Bridges did all game.

Time to have a discussion on Bridges, on why his defense is so f*cking horrific, and how his membership in Team Wingstop needs to be revoked, his membership replaced by McBride.

Bridges is more of a team defender than he is a stopper, and he's better against 2s than he is 1s. OG is the wet blanket stopper and Deuce is our best POA defender.

Bridges has to tone down gambling for steals and he'll round back into shape, his jumper is really the biggest issue with him right now. He can't make threes from outside the corners.

Bridges was on Lillard's rear hip nearly every play. So much that I figured it's by design, he can't be getting beat so consistently.
So, I suppose the plan was to funnel Lillard to help, which didn't really seem to work that well.

Maybe it will eventually. Or might work better with a different lineup, like Precious or Mitch, with Towns relieved of rim protection duties. I don't know. Maybe it just needs time.

You clearly see flashes right now though of the elite facets of all our top players games are. It will be a combination of the players getting used to each other and Thibs job to consistently put them in positions to consistently succeed. Like a puzzle coming together.

In my minds eye I don't see one bad fitting piece on this team right now. Its just a matter of figuring out how to best play them as a unit. Brunson will be fine. The only only only big question to me is how to mitigate KATs drop off at rim protection when teams are exploiting him down there. Is it mainly a Thibs adjustment or is it simply getting an elite rim protector (Mitch Rob, to a lesser extent Achiuwa, or a trade) in the lineup for more minutes a game?

Kat is the franchise Folksssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If Knicks figure out how to CONSISTENTLY defend in the 5 out system its game over for the league. But I don't know if we are there yet. The insde the paint this year has been so much softer. Can we do it 'well enough' to succeed kinda like Celts have without a true Center with KP out?

Do we still really need a rim protector to play significant minutes to mitigate teams that gash us inside? Is it just Thibs making the eventual adjustments successfully? Is he a one trick Pony who will struggle coaching any other system consistently but his drop system? Because we all know when he has an elite rim protector combined with some guys who are good at closing out on the 3 his system is PROVEN elite (3 of last 4 years sans the Kemba/Fournier starter year).

All huge questions that need to be answered.

KAT at the 5 is what opens up the offense, putting him at the 4 means spacing changes, and sort of takes away from what he is. I would only move him back to the 4 against certain teams like the Sixers, Cavs and Nuggets. The biggest issue with his defense is that he's being asked to do something he's not good at and not being elevated at the thing he is good at - switching.

If we switched a lot more our defense would improve, the team is built to do it and KAT has proof of concept since he played PF last year and had to defend a lot of different players, some of which are wings masquerading as bigs. Just seems like a dumb decision to have a C play in a drop when he's more adept at playing in switches. We have a similar construction to the Rockets, a weak rim protector surrounded by wings who pick up the slack, and they're 7th but they switch more than us.

Also, the thing happening on the low is that it's Josh who is our secondary creator right now and not KAT. Josh is second on the team in touches per game, he's handling the ball a lot more than people would expect, you take him out the lineup for a C and we lose the only bit of pace we have. He pushes the break off defensive rebounds and gets the defense scrambling. I would think Tom is going to start Precious next to KAT, the defense will improve but the offense takes a step back if he's not making the three.

OG with 14-6-5-3-2

But more impressive:

Held Bucks to:

4-17 FG (23% FG)
Caused 6 deflections
Game high 9 contested shots

There are games (at least so far) that last years system would have potentially worked so much better than our porous interior. Again it could be partly due to learning curve but having the ability when you have a 12-15 point lead to switch to Mitch Robinson or an elite rim protector and play KAT a few minutes at the 4 would I think be beneficial no matter what. Because you are minimizing your ability to preserve your lead at that point. Thinks Cavs game with a 13 pt lead and Hawks game with a 5pt lead late. Sure you lose a bit of spacing but what you gain defensively especially for strategic lead preservation would be a huge. The ability to play any kind of defense and having the personel to do it would be a monstrous advantage.

Lastly NoDope last years squad post OG was like 20-5 . It most definitely will work at least for spots on the game.

Mitch (or another C)
KAT (kinda equal to Randle with better spacing ability)
OG
Bridges (better all around game than DD)
Brunson

Again I am not necessarily advocating this as a majority of the time kind of thing but it can certainly be mixed in as a tremendous advantage (and we know for a fact that Thibs can coach this kind of defense at a high level)

If possible Giannis for OG++

You keep Giannis away from other teams and he is an elite defender himself.

KAT
Giannis
Bridges
McBride
Brunson

Hart off bench

After last night, KAT is now shooting 40% from 3.

For his career.

995 makes in 2488 attempts. This guy is a corny, foul prone, defensive liability, injury risk who also produces an unfathomable quality of offense. You almost have to be wilfully ignorant or actively trying to screw things up for it not to work.

Lol seriously bro?

You going to let a slow 7 game start to the season (for his standards) basically erase his absolutely historic 3 years with the organization ?

Brunson is going no where.

It’s not about the 7game slow start!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s about Brunson being the best version of himself doesn’t fit this team!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kat Bridges etc all need touches to thrive and their pg setting them up offensively!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is not brunsons strength!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He is a score first pg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That’s not what this team needs tbh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know this is going to sound harsh but we’d be 8-0 pretty easily if we had Lamelo or even young as our pg instead of Brunson!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bucks aren't taking on Brunson especially with Lillard there.

Also I doubt Leon trades him so I think he's untouchable unless there's a regime change or JB personally asks out.

Randle had to back off from being the too dominant alpha when Brunson came on baord.

Now Brunson simply has to do the same. Keep in mind he did it last night with 9 assists. He has and can be a bit more deferential (as he was with Luka).

Even with that said, He is still our best scorer regardless. This is a guy who averaged 35 pts a game in the playoffs last year. One of the best playoff performances ever.

He will have to kind of find a happy medium which he will. They are still in the feeling out process GA.

I do get your point though about him being a score first guard but he'll be fine.... Keep in mind Kolek who is an insane passer as he gets more and more acclamated will be mixed in too.
