Dyson Daniels - 220 steals in 73 games

Post#1 » by ChuckChilly » Sun Nov 10, 2024 5:12 am

I knew he was going to be a step up from DeJounte Murray in the defense department, but I didn't think he could be a defensive player of league talent. Happy to be wrong about that. I also thought the trade for Murray was in NO's favor, but now I think its even, if not more favorable on the Hawks side. Kudos for Landry Fields for somewhat correcting his mistake.

Would a dpoy quality player be leading their team to the 26th ranked defense?

He had 6 steals tonight but the Bulls scored 125 points.

I thought he played ok. The steals are nice but I feel that he didn't really stop anyone otherwise

He looked great on D against the Bulls, but Atl is just stuck with Young. They need to move on somehow

Is it good defense or is he just gambling? Monta Ellis was actually a pretty high steals guy in some years

A perimeter defender isn't going to drag his team (a team where his backcourt partner is Trae Young) to a top 10 defence by himself.

Just an absurd attempt to dispute how excellent of a defender he is.

So, there is 240 minutes of total play time for the whole team. Daniels played 36 minutes. That is about 15% of the team effort. You can't expect him to hold down a team defensively, especially as a guard.

Dyson Daniels has been a murder robot on defense since he's been in the league. He hasn't stayed healthy enough (no one in New Orleans ever is healthy...) or played a big enough role to get noticed by the wider fanbase, but anyone who has seen him know the defensive talent is off the charts.

He's one healthy season from deserving to be mentioned amongst the leagues top 5 guards. There was another thread last week about defensive guards and everyone mentioned Jrue, Caruso, Derrick White, and Suggs. Dyson is the other guy I'd put in that group, and he's a lot taller/longer than all of them. He's absolutely lock down and then forces turnovers and deflections like nobody else in the league right now.

Hmm, he's a good roleplayer, I don't see him as high as DPOY. Giddey and Mills were probably the better players in his Australian days. Hawks need to move around a couple pieces if they want to win. There's Bogdanovic, Capela, etc. but the needle isn't moving much. Dyson and Rissacher are the right direction to go in, though.

Hawks are 2nd in Steals and 11th in working off of turnovers, most of that is credit to Dyson. His length, size, etc. are solid. Numbers look good, too.

NOP won the Murray trade, but that move was ok, it wasn't about to work out for the Hawks with Murray/Trae back court.

It's a team game, he can only do so much. He is playing beside one of the worst defenders in league.

Can't believe some are trying to diminish his defensive capabilites, because of Atlanta's poor overall defense.

He cannot stop a team from scoring by himself, but he is an absolutely ELITE perimeter defender, who can pick up full court and stay in front of just about any player.

Does it all - fights through screens, can block shots going to the rim, and has brilliant hands.
Sometimes a player's greatest challenge is coming to grips with his role on the team

It will be a crime if, health permitting, he's not on one of the All-NBA Defense teams after this season is over.

What's even more amazing is that soccer was his favorite sport growing up.

I've wanted him on the Raptors for a while now. An athletic 6'8 defensive point guard with a solid motor and index grades that really showcase his defensive and playmaking abilities. Still really young but has demonstrated that he can shoot and score when provided playing time. His ability to fight through and get around screens is really impressive.

That was the case for Steve Nash too.

I got him as steals leader for the season at $41 before the season started. He had the highest steals per min last year and was always going to get minutes on this Hawks team

I think hes very good, but obviously, all high steals guys gamble sometimes. I always saw him as very similar to Thybulle, obviously, Thybulle didn't really work out, Daniels has potential to become much better player. Funnily enough, both Australian, Australia has a chance to put those two on the court at the same time as super tier perimeter defenders, Thybulle tho didn't even make Australian final cut this year, one of those guys who is in the NBA, but doesn't even make national team final 12.
