Anybody else really enjoying the new Raptors Show?

Post#1 » by raps95 » Tue Nov 12, 2024 4:23 pm

I’ve always liked Blake’s work but wasn’t sure about Matt Bonner. It wasn’t really for any good reason though as I’ve found him to be really informative and engaging. He has avoided some of the things that can plague former players where they fall back on more feelings/intuition/old school thinking and he really seems to do his homework both on the raptors and their opponents. Apparently he was doing work for eight seasons with the spurs before this so we are probably benefiting from him having honed his craft there first.

I haven’t watched it since Will left but I’m going to give it a try.

Not a huge fan. I like Blake and all but Matt is a bit annoying. I’m very over hearing ‘back when I was with the spurs’. He’s a likeable guy and all but I think he needs to keep the spurs stories to at most one per epidsode.
The hello & welcome podcast is fantastic though

I like Will well enough but my preference is for a bit more analytical approach like Samson would bring to his postgame pods.

In terms of the spurs stuff I cut him some slack because that’s literally the entirety of his experience for the last 18 years of playing and broadcasting. Plus, it’s not like he’s coming to us from the pistons and telling us, “Well, the way the pistons did this…”. Personally, I’m up for insights into how (arguably) the best team of the last 25+ years and one of the greatest coaches of all time did things.

I agree with you, and also Matt has a unique perspective because he's been with the Spurs when they were great and covered them when they were garbage.

This is how I feel about it too. Matt at best is entertaining but I'm already growing tired of his Spurs stories as well. He'll then follow up "back when I was with the Spurs" with "not to always talk about the Spurs"...but that's what he does time and time again lol. I do like his player perspective sometime. Especially when they're interviewing another player. That is a cool angle we're not privy to usually.

I do like the Hello & Welcome podcast. I like it better when Alex isn't on though. Alex doesn't really bring anything to the table. Samson Folk has been on the H&W podcast quite a few times already with Will and those were really good. Will going solo is pretty good as well.

Listened to a few shows, not live so I can skip portions not interested in. Bonner seems OK so far, good sense of humor. I'd still incorporate a portion for live callers. Guess they're not interested in letting fans speak their minds. Hmmmm

The segment today on how teams are guarding Grady was really good. I think it’s healthy to have different shows that focus on different things covering the team, I enjoy both this Raptors Show, Hello and Welcome, and Pull Up Tre.

Caught some today. Matt was talking about how teams are game planning Gradey more now, and "top blocking" him. Blake asked him to explain and he did, very well. It was real basketball talk. I only ever listen to the new show, or the old Will Lou show, when I happen to be driving at the right time. But every time I catch Blake and Matt I learn something, unlike the Will and Alex jokefest. Bonner is relatable, and is a good partner for Blake, adding a blend of NBA playing experience to Blake's stats approach. It's light years better than the old show which was lame except when Will had a knowledgeable guest on from another team, and Alex wasn't involved.
There goes my hero. Watch him as he goes.

for me, this is the best quick hit raptors podcast. having a player that can articulate stuff is great and blake keeps it moving. perfect 1 hour for raptors talk.

That would be horrible. Most fans that call into shows like that are dumb.

I've heard some shows where it's good but they control it well and lot of regular callers.

The show needs to be longer. It's working so far even though Matt Bonner does come off a bit arrogant and know-it-all ish lol

Yeah I wouldn’t trust the average RealGMer to speak on a show and the average RealGMer has 100000 times the knowledge of a casual fan lol
What an absolute failure and disaster this franchise is, ran by one of the most incompetent front offices in the league.

Pretty sure we already had a thread for The Raptor Show. Anyways, it's far, far superior than the previous incarnation of the show. Matt Bonner is a real treat to listen to: he has loads of on-air experience and it really shows. Great stories, anecdotes and memories of his years as a player, coupled with his knowledge of the game and broadcasting experience; Bonner just seems like the complete package for a mature, focused and analytical basketball podcast.

Will Lou is very good, however Alex Wong really brings the overall quality of Hello and Welcome down so badly you simply can't listen, because he's an insufferable on-air personality. It turns into a clown show. Once Alex starts talking, everyone starts acting like a clown: whether it was on the previous incarnation of The Raptors Show, with Blake and Will, or now with Hello and Welcome. But when Alex isn't on and instead it's a knowledgeable guest you want to listen to, such as Oren Weisfeld or Vivek Jacob, it's really good. But Will's post game shows are usually fire, because Will is very passionate and emotional and really gets into it, much more so than Blake Murphy ever would, and as a fan it's a really satisfying listen.

In terms of the excellent Samson joining Will's post game shows, I wish Will and Samson would stop trying to be comedians. They try so hard to be funny, but they're not and Samson just ends up giggling and snickering at his own lame jokes or inside jokes that the listener is not partial to. It gets really annoying. (Samson and Trey are notorious for this on Raptors Republic, constant giggling, snickering, inside jokes and constant references to their private group chats or text messages, more snickering and giggling etc).

You don't get that silly, immature crap with Blake and Matt. In fact, the best podcasts never pull that wannabe comedian routine: they just get right down to business and talk hoops. Whether it's Zach Lowe, or Windhorst with Bontemps and MacMahon, they let their knowledge and expertise do the proverbial talking and not some try hard comedy schtick (followed by endless giggling and snickering).

It just comes down to professionalism and focus. Matt and Blake really excel in that aspect, whereas Hello and Welcome has some improvements to make, or perhaps some growing up to do.
