"I've only been with the team now for a few months, but I've paid attention to Pop my entire career, you know, and he, I think is one of the best, if not the best and putting everything into perspective," said Paul. "And he's so selfless and he makes sure we understand how privileged we are to play this game and to be in the NBA, but he'd be the first person to tell you not to worry about him and to go out and hoop. But of course all the guys with our team, staff, everyone definitely miss him because he's Pop. So there's a feeling when he's in the room that just comforts everybody."
Golden State coach Steve Kerr offered some encouraging words Saturday about Gregg Popovich's physical well-being.
The Spurs' Hall of Fame coach is in a rehabilitation program after suffering what the team called a mild stroke on Nov. 2.
“We keep communicating and I know he is going to get well,” Kerr said. “The doctors are feeling great about all of that, so very happy about that. But it is always tough to see someone you love who is not healthy.”
Kerr, who as a player helped the Spurs win NBA titles in 1999 and 2003, is one of Popovich’s closest friends in the coaching profession.
“He means the world to me,” said Kerr, who was also an assistant on Popovich's Team USA staff that won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. “Tough to know that he going through this medical situation. Think about him all the time and we have been in touch.”
Credit Johnson for being willing to speak some truth rather than opt for the nightly ringing endorsement that would be safer politically. That’s what Popovich surely wants from the 39-year-old assistant who has been on his staff since 2018, and what the 75-year-old will hopefully give to Wembanyama himself again when he’s back on the bench. While team sources said there is no timeline on a Popovich return, the league’s all-time winningest coach continues to progress and the organization’s hope remains that he will, in fact, resume the role he has held since 1996.
