supposed to be the future all star and face of the franchise... should Kerr reduce his mins?

8 pts, 19% on threes , 39%TS, -4.9 BPM (on 26 mins, 4th team high) :banghead:

I'm thinking a mixture of him being ill and struggling with energy after & just bad shooting. The team has generally done well with him out there even when he has had a bad shooting night this year, this Dallas game was the big exception (though he has looked worse lately for sure). I was actually surprised to see Podz at all in the 2nd half, but I guess with Kyle out we had a limited number of ball handlers available.

Give the kid time.

He was playing through a broken nose, with a mask hindering his vision. People really think players playing through injuries should be 100% is baffling to me.
Most 4th Quarter Points in Final since 1991
1995 Shaquille O'Neal 11.5
2000 Shaquille O'Neal 11.5 (61.1% TS)
2015 Stephen Curry 10.8 (75.1% TS)
1997 Michael Jordan 10.7 (55.1% TS)
1998 Michael Jordan 10.6 (50.6% TS)
2011 Dirk Nowitzki 10.3 (68.0% TS)

I know Podz has the nose issue but I think his confidence may have taken a bit of a hit because I think he thought with Klay gone, he would be the automatic starter. If his down play continues, "future face of the franchise" may quickly become a former Warrior.

Seriously. What happened to Podz? His face got broken. That's what happened to him. :noway:

This reminded me. One of my first interactions on RealGM many years ago was a guy who was trying to make the case that the Cavs should trade LeBron. Part of his rationale was that perhaps he was error prone. Because he had a broken nose.

...

you think the guy has a bum face? That'll just keep getting reinjured?

That's weird. For lack of a better word, LeBron's actually pretty graceful for a guy his size. Now, the guy I do wonder about is Holmgren. Rail thin, a little herky jerky with his movements and always kicking out his left leg and landing on one foot when going for rebounds and blocks. Not sure if that contributed to the Lisfranc injury that wiped out his first season. It definitely contributed to the broken hip. Here he is in high school doing the same damned thing - despite the fact that the guy he's up against is like 5'3." :D

I hope we didn't miss the window to move him this summer for peak value. I hope it's just the broken nose and he'll settle in. I have some reasons to doubt he will..

The thing to do is claim someone has an injury prone face, pop them a good one, and then say "see?"

Re: Podz - sophomore slump. Both him and TJD going through it.. this is fairly standard. I know it sounds like an old wives tale, but I remember seeing someone say this ages and ages ago, and its turned out to be true

Year 1 - league doesnt know you or care, so talented players do decently well
Year 2 - league adjusts and forces the player to adjust, usually the 1st time theyve ever had to at a high level
Year 3 - 1st real test: can the player adjust and thrive?
Year 4 - who they will likely be during their career

Obviously its not ironclad, especially with some guys being rookies at 18 (JK) and some being rookies at 37 (TJD). But even though its a simple idea and fairly zoomed out.. its kinda accurate

Outside of the obvious shooting slump, I think the big difference this year is that he's playing a lot more as the lead guard. There is going to be a learning curve for sure, but I think he will improve throughout the season (especially when he gets some confidence back with his jumper).

Last year he had a total of 280 minutes without another PG on the court. He's already at 222 minutes with that scenario this season. That's a major shift... from almost exclusively being next to Steph or CP3, to almost exclusively not being on the court with Steph.

I'm looking forward to seeing his shot start falling and hopefully his usage going up when he's running point without Steph (it already is double from when he's next to Steph, which is good).

This years Podz compared to last years Podz is a step down.

Thus years backup PG compared to last years backup PG is a step up.

I am not worried. The team is so deep, everyone has a short leash. We see what he can do, know that last year he performed closer to his ceiling than floor and this year is off to a slow start. He is fundamentally sound and not worried about him being a scrub.

Trade him now while his value is decent. Team has a glut of backcourt players. Podz for Kessler.

I think the oddest thing about Podz is that he was supposed to be a shooter, but he doesn't want to shoot. That's my biggest complaint.

I don't know all of what he did with his summer but he 1. spent a ton of time playing and visiting with team USA overseas and other semi-social activities and 2. working on his body.

What I didn't hear about is him spending a ton of time doing offensive skills work and taking tons of shots. That's not to say he didn't, but the main thing I remember him saying about his offensive game is eliminating the hook shots(I was bummed to find out) and taking fewer floaters. He said he wanted to improve his jumper, both from 3 and in the midrange, but I don't think we've seen any improvement there.

Contrast that with Kuminga and Moody who both spent tons of time in the gym working on skills, according to all the footage we saw from them this summer. Both players look much more comfortable and aggressive hunting shots.

So my guess is that if Podz focuses heavily on his offensive bag of tricks this summer, we may see something much different next year.

Would look at team record before coming down too hard on Podz. Guy's playing with a face mask.

I still see him as an elite role player type that greases the wheels and brings the X factor to the team in the end, more-so than All-Star. Pretty sure he will get into form in time. He's confident and his game isn't really about scoring, kind of like a Draymond or Iggy.

I don’t know what you’re talking about. He’s taking pull ups and mid range jump shots this year. He’s clearly worked on his offensive game. He was talking about being the 2nd option and that he would take more shots this year because of all the departures. It hasn’t shown yet in most games but he did have a small spurt against Houston when it was needed.

You don't know what I'm talking about? He's taking different shots but they're not going in. Do you know what I'm talking about when I say that?

The fact that he's taking different shots doesn't tell me he worked hard on those skills this summer. That he's missing so much indicates to me that he didn't work as hard on those skills as needed.
