People were already ready to scapegoat Franz for his contract before the season even started.

Welcome to Realgm this is absolutely a place where have your guy vs my guy arguments. Legitimate basketball discussion with good analysis is hard to find.

There was no “good analysis” in your post and your point was not legitimate as I provided an example of Paolo receiving similar treatment. I felt like you were just trying to stir stuff up.

But it’s possible I misunderstood your intent.

Hah and your post sucks too

So yea, back to our more poignant and appropriate "my guy, your guy" discussion.

This trade wasn't some conspiracy - it was just a GM wanting AD bad enough where in most people's eyes he overpaid by a long shot to get him.

My question still is can Franz be this version of himself with Paolo back? It seems to be more of Franz OR Paolo instead of Franz AND Paolo. How do we get the best version of them together at the same time on the floor?

That's a valid take, imo...Franz is unquestionably really good and always has been. He has NOT been a Max player next to Paolo. He has absolutely been a max player without him. How they meld back together in a way where it's clearly Jordan/Pippen, Tatum/Brown, where both can be fully realized as contributing to winning basketball is the trick.

Franz is more well-rounded, skill-wise than Paolo...arguably, so was Pippen. But Paolo is THE ALPHA offensive DOG and, fortunately, Franz has the skillset and demeanor to work around that and still play at an All-Star level...Great opportunity to sort it out, certainly not a problem.

With Paolo's hercky jersey style, he can produce his offense against any level of competition. That's why his level of play didn't diminish when he was in the playoffs or NCAA tournament.

Franz style is a little more predictable and easier to defend. His 3-point shot could change that. That way, they just don't clog the paint like they did last year. Franz is also a better defender. Paolo's defense is improving.

Yep. We saw flashes of this from rookie Franz and with Paolo down, and Franz being a few years older, we’re now seeing it consistently from Franz… BUT can he keep this level of aggression up when Paolo gets back?

I don’t see why not but his quote about learning how to take non-efficient shots was a good insight into his thinking. While that is great, he needs THIS mindset moving forward. The Magic are paying him to be a star, not a guy that fits in and only takes efficient shots. That would be fine if we had better offensive weapons but it’s clear as day that a ‘bad’ shot for him is better than letting most of the others try to find a ‘good’ shot.

No one knows how it will turn out but we’ll soon find out. It will be a disaster if that shot doesn’t start falling.

Let’s hope it doesn’t evolve into whatever is going on with Mikal Bridges right now.
Every piece of evidence we have says he is worth the max. Him regressing to a non-max-worthy player would be a colossal fall off. I don't think we're appreciating how good he is given how young he is.

You’re crazy. I get that second contract lotto players that are good nearly always get their max contracts but it doesn’t mean that they’re worth it when they sign it.

Franz is good. Franz is 5/175 good. That is not hating. That is telling the truth. He has not even sniffed an all-star appearance or an all-nba spot. Giving him a max is a pure gamble.
Still think I'm crazy?

It was after the first week of the season and he had a slow start. They proposed trading him for a Kyle Anderson type, the rationale that he would be more “team oriented” and not tie up capspace like Paolo would eventually when he would be eligible for extension…one of the all time takes on this board. People just have no patience.

No… but it took Paolo going down for a different mindset to take place… lucky for us, Paolo’s injury is relatively minor and it has given Franz the opportunity to grow into what we needed. The gamble paid off due to a bit of bad luck ironically.

Now, if he reverts back to ‘Mr Efficient’ and moves the ball to less offensively gifted players instead of looking for his when Paolo gets back, we’ll be right back at square 1 in this conversation.

Everyone has a role to play when playing around someone. Franz being able to show signs of being an elite onball player to being and elite off-ball player is crucial. Paolo at this point of his career needs the ball in his hands because he needs to develop being the guy, and things just naturally are better with the ball in his hands. I think once Paolo masters on ball duty in the next few seasons. You see more of that transition where he can play off it and be 2x deadly. But that's a few seasons from now.

Franz will be fine. What I am thinking is what if Paolo comes back sooner than later, I just want Franz to have the same aggression attacking plus scoring. Then we win a lot of games plus good 3pt%

To be fair

We have to see how he does in the playoffs. Those game 6 and 7 performances were yuck

But man am I glad he stepped up and is keeping the team afloat. Kudos and respect
