We're not on the Sox/Tigers level if we keep all the prospects you care about. Why do we need to be on their level anyway? There is always a chance we won't see them in the World Series. Getting Santana could help us get ahead of the Phillies. Fernando is a good prospect, but he stays injured and is just a prospect. If Pelfrey pitches for the Mets again and sucks, we would be lucky to get a sandwich for him. Mulvey looks like he has good stuff, but he can be replaced. I hate to lose Gomez, but as long as Beltran is here, he won't see CF and thats where he should be.

From Minny perspective: Do not need both Martinez and Gomez since they have 3 high OF prospects in minors.

Gomez (since he's ready for big league role, even though I like FMart better)
2 of the pitchers from 4 (Mulvey, Humber, Pelfrey, Guerra)
Heilman (to pen depth since Nathan will be dealt at some point)
and an IF prospect like Anderson Hernandez (who will never break in with Reyes there). Minny needs infielders bad.

Won't get Guerra so he shouldn't even be involved. The Twins could take Hernandez since he will never hit enough to stick with the Mets.

Personally, I think we're already ahead of the Phillies. OK, bad finish last year. But - right now, talent wise, I'd bet on this team beating Philly and wining the division next year.

The Mets could land Blanton with a package of Carlos Gomez, Aaron Heilman and pitcher Kevin Mulvey, Buster Olney of ESPN reports.

Interesting- so the Mets will have dealt 2 top outfield talents for a middle of the rotation innings eater, a journeyman outfielder, and a backup catcher.

We're gonna' have to overpay for pitching at some point. Is it still worth it to try and shoot for it again this season, knowing how stacked Boston and Detroit are? Or should we just point towards '09, when we open the new stadium?

FoxSports - The Mariners are continuing their aggressive pursuit of Erik Bedard major-league sources say, and there are growing indications that the teams could be moving closer to a deal.

The Reds also remain interested in Bedard, but the Mariners are willing to trade their top outfield prospec, Adam Jones, while the Reds will not part with their best minor-league outfielder Jay Bruce.

For the Orioles, the final approval for a Bedard deal would rest with owner Peter Angelos, who has long resisted trading veterans for prospects but hired MacPhail last June with the understanding that the team needed a new direction.

I'm just frustrated. I know he's a good baseball mind, and I WANT our team to do well. But we just haven't addressed our real needs yet, and pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report in a little over a month...

What some people don't understand is that we don't have to overpay for pitching.

The choices are two. Omar can Overpay or he can Wait. When (and why?) did overpaying become the option of choice by so many fans?

maybe we'll do just fine with Pedro (16 wins), Maine, Perez, Pelfrey (13-15 each), El Duque (depends on how long he stays healthy) and whoever we pick up - Hernandez or Garcia or whoever and Maybe Humber or Mulvey carries a few starts.

I'm not ready to jump on the "overpay for the needed starting pitcher" bandwagon.

UPDATE, 1-10-08 at 11:29am: Christensen says Mets owner Fred Wilpon gave Omar Minaya the green light to try to acquire Santana, meaning he's amenable to a contract extension exceeding $100MM.

UPDATE, 1-10-08 at 9:38am: Peter Botte of the New York Daily News has a new quote from Hank: he's "leaning away from" from the Yankees doing a Santana deal.

FROM 1-09-08 at 10:54pm:

Joe Christensen of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune suggests the Mets might be the best fit for Johan Santana. He says they're offering four players, three of them pitchers: Deolis Guerra, Carlos Gomez, Kevin Mulvey, and Phil Humber. It's a strong package.

Christensen says the Twins would accept if the Mets added Fernando Martinez to the package (not sure if Martinez would replace Gomez, or it would just be five players instead of four).
