Thanks for 20 years

Post#1 » by NBA Sheady » Mon Nov 18, 2024 12:04 am

Today marks 20 years for me on this site.

Thanks for all the entertainment and information. I've had so many family and friends try to let me know about breaking raptors related news. Each time my answer was the same: "I know". If the breaking news wasn't on the wiretap it was on the first page of this forum.

I've learned a ton about the game and the league here. I greatly appreciate the college scouting reports from you lot as I don't watch college ball. I remember guys here being hyped about Curry. I'd pull up his college highlights and think...him...but a few decades and several chips later the guys dying for us to draft him were proven right. I don't have an eye for young talent. Guys here were clamoring for us to trade for a young Haliburton in Sacramento. Just like with a young Curry I'd pull up his highlights and wonder what people saw in him.

When I first joined I noticed many fans here felt it was important to let people know they were in Toronto. At the time I was in Oshawa. So I picked the user name MadDogSHWA. I've now been in Toronto since 2007. I'm commemorating my 20 years here with a name change.

Thanks again team. :D

I’ve been on this site since around 03/04 too.

I remember some epic threads here, like:

- The guy who worked at Abercrombie and looked down on others.
- Supersub and vini_vidi_vici posting analytics before it was popular
- “basketball should be played outdoors, we could attract millions in attendance, and people could bring pets.”
- the maytrix piss in the washroom thread
- the FireBC threads. I started a FireBC website and actually heard back from Tim Leiweke and Tom Anselmi.

I too joined in 2004. Before then back to the 1990's, I posted on Raptors newsgroup alt.sports.basketball.nba.tor-raptors or whatever it was called via Usenet that became obsolete. Many posters moved here from those newsgroups (like The Hater, aka teddd, RIP) starting around 2001. I gave in & joined RealGM in 2004. It's been a journey.

Usenet, Jesus. I haven't thought of that in ages. I used to hit that up on the daily back in The Old Days (TM).

God, I feel old now...

I started truly following basketball during the 2001 season; the Vince / Iverson battle in the playoffs had me hooked.

That year I was in first year, and our dorm had a coax cable hub screwed to the outside of the building that connected the common rooms with TV. I had a friend dangle me out of a 3rd floor bathroom by my ankles to run a 40ft cable from the hub to my room so we could watch the series and drink beer.

Didn't find you lovely folks until several years later. And I agree with OP, I've learned a lot. What little I understand of the cap, or what players to be watching for in up coming drafts I largely attribute to this group.

Casey Pound the Rock thread had me dying and all the Turbo sigs were hilarious.

Lurked for many years. Found this site when I was working continental shifts in early 2000's. Finally joined in Nov 2019 after the ship.

This is my most visited site with xvideos in a far 2nd place.

The Rasho "let's NBA" comic thread was one of my favourites. It's been so many years, I don't even know if it can be found at this point.

Also the Jose vs T.J threads were the most heated threads ever. Honestly the tank vs not tanking and other most contentious topics the last few years do not hold a candle to the sheer vitriol of Jose vs T.J. I was a Calderon guy at the time. That was 16 years ago now, which is crazy and makes me feel really old. I was just starting undergrad when I was posting about that, now I'm married with kids.

Nice. I joined in 2003 after graduating from university, but prior to that I was a mainstay on the ESPN message boards that had a rivalry going with the Orlando board - then the espn boards kept getting spammed liked crazy and most of the posters moved over to RealGM. I can't believe it's still going strong.

Been reading this site almost daily since early 2000's, rarely posts anything though

Here are some of my favourite threads over the years in no particular order

- Maytricks Championship
- Photoshopped Movie Posters
- Smitch Draw a Play
- Ball

don't remember the thread title but it involved
- The 13 games Bargnani has arrived
- Endless Calderon - Ford debates
- Colangelo Collars
- Calderon passing Gatorade Bottles

I started lurking on this forum during the 2004 NHL lockout. Puckheads were worried that fans would jump ship, and in my case they were right! I joined a couple years later, but this was the start. No matter how grim things look this year I take comfort that it's better than disenfranchised Vince + rookie Araujo :D
