Re: Sixers 2024-25 Season Thread Part 1
The problem with this team imo is they simply do not have an nba level point guard. Starting or off the bench. Injured or healthy. Maxey is not a floor general. There's no one on this team to take the ball, calm the troops and run through our top sets.
It reminds me of the 13-14 team when we had to trade for ish Smith to simply not be an embarrassment.
We struggle to simply get our best players the ball in their spots and fumble around with the ball at any sign of pressure.

Agree but I was not referring to our own picks but those from the Harden trade. PG for Ingram cause he is much younger and then extend him the max that he has been demanding.sixers hoops wrote:WentzerWuver wrote:I would too as those picks are near worthless and I highly doubt NO would even consider trading him. A lot of the potential trade targets I see mentioned, probably aren’t actually available.

Pels looking to move Ingram by the deadline so maybe PG for him plus a 1st round pick swap.

I would be careful trading picks beyond 2027. When Embiid and George are falling apart, I would like to have some picks to rebuild. I don’t see any realistic acquisition making much of a difference. This team’s hopes rest on Embiid and George in the playoffs. If they don’t come through, then any addition won’t matter.
We are capped out for years and don’t have our own firsts in 2025 and 2027. However, we do have 4 firsts over the next four years. Two in 2026 and two in 2028. The clippers and OKC picks may get traded, but I don’t want Morey leaving us with a crippled roster and no picks for a Hail Mary overpay. None of these additions will matter if Embiid and George are hurt come playoff time.

Yeah should definitely just be the picks from the Harden trade. Trading Sixers picks would be irresponsible.
Which I think should be fine if we're just talking a Herb Jones level player. That's similar to the price guys like Josh Hart and Derrick White went for.

Re: Sixers 2024-25 Season Thread Part 1
Some more optimism for the Sixers:
Say this season turns out to be a disaster. It's one of those seasons where everything goes wrong and they suck all year and they finish with a terrible record. If this team is lucky enough to be bad enough to get a top 6 pick and take another young stud, suddenly, if McCain is as good as he looks right now, the team would suddenly have 3 blue chip caliber players without any deliberate tanking even being done.
That puts the Sixers WAY ahead of schedule for a post-Embiid era. The fear everyone's had all along is if the Sixers don't win with Embiid they're going to have to go through another 5-7 year rebuild and even then they have to get lucky and land a bunch of building block players. The Sixers may already have two of them already if McCain is this good and they haven't even tanked yet. And if this season continues to spiral and spiral, they could have 3 and the rebuild hasn't even started.
And that's not even factoring in that Embiid still could have some really good years left even if this season turns out to be one of those years.
I get that this is all months down the road and these are all hypotheticals, and there's still plenty of time to turn this season around, but this is something you can keep in the back of your mind every time this team loses a game and things look really bleak. That even if this season turns out to be just a lost season, they could find themselves if they get lucky in the lottery super well set up for the future. Something that would've been considered crazy just a year ago.

Outside of significant injury, they're not going to finish with less than 35 wins IMO. That would put them around 10th in the lottery, which equates to about a 14% chance to keep the pick.
I guess if they're like 20-28 at the trade deadline (.500 from now), they could shut Embiid (and maybe PG) down and tank the rest of the season.
I certainly hope it doesn't come to that.

Yeah. We can’t really scale our season’s record off of the first stretch of games with no Maxey, Embiid, and George. If the Sixers fall apart, they most likely will end up sending a pick in the 8-15 range to OKC, which would suck. I hope we at least make the playoffs, so we can pay that debt this year with a later first.
I do agree though that hitting on really good players outside the lottery sets us up with some talent for when Embiid and George flame out.

We lack size, youth and decision making.
That’s the lineup I’d go with
C - Embiid / Drummond / Yabusele
F - Yabusele / George / KJ Martin
F - George / Oubre / Caleb Martin
G - McCain / Caleb Martin / Gordon
G - Maxey / Lowry / Jackson

My concern is that Embiid and George only have two or three good years left. I would like to pay the OKC and Nets debt in 2025 and 2027, so we can reduce the risk of sending a lottery pick in the trades. I would want a really nice deal to move the Clippers 2028 pick as well. Since we have committed a lot to aging players, I think the unprotected Clippers pick could have its greatest value helping us add young talent to our program.
Herb Jones and Tari Eason prob aren’t getting moved. I feel like we are going to overpay for Finney-Smith or Batum. Again, if Embiid and George perform at peak level, we can win with this roster. Overpaying for DFS won’t help unless Embiid and George are performing at their highest level. I think we very well could waste resources on a complementary player and still get bounced in the second round.
Morey’s deadline moves of George Hill, Jalen McDaniels, and Buddy Hield haven’t really translated on the court anyway. I would rather hang onto our picks unless this group demonstrates that they are a legit title contender by February. Maybe move KJ for a better player with an extra year on his deal if something like that materializes. However, the current climate of carelessly trading away your team’s future for minimal upside doesn’t make much sense to me.

Embiid, PG, Caleb, Oubre and Maxey are the best starters going forward due to the importance of having scorers on the 2nd unit. It's why the Knicks are struggling cause they have no one on their 2nd unit that can provide a spark, therefore losing their lead when they come in. Last thing we want is McCain taking shots away from the Big 3, which is counter productive, trust me. The whole starting the 5 best scorers is just a gamer mentality on NBAK2.

McCain should only start on a rebuilding team!

I'd rather just go:
Maxey
McCain
Martin
George
Embiid
Yabu is a great energy guy but he isn't a rim protector. George plays the 4 anyway it's position less style today unless you have a true center which we do. The 1-4 spots can chop and change.
Have Oubre be sixth man and chuck, with Lowry and one of Maxey/McCain be there so the IQ isn't pure negative lol. Looks simple to me. KJ/Bullock as the follow up, 3/4 or split with Martin and George, Center Drummond or Yabu depending on matchup
Part of the reason why the starting unit sucks is because Sexy Oubre is an airhead. He shouldn't be anywhere near a starting lineup.
The other issue is we have our premier guys being flogs thinking they are Harden. That's on Nurse its time to say right stop being aholes and ballhogs and let the youngins cook and let thickums Lowry set you up.
Lol at thinking we don't have a point when we have the 3 on the list that can do it but the onus is squarely and the big two doo doo heads to swallow the ego and pride.
Sports stars aren't the sharpest tools in the shed. Both are very capable to play All NbA level defence yes it isn't flashy but it will work better for teams chances.
Both have had career threatening injuries so don't be full Giannis dumbass and play it as is.
Morey can hit in the draft so I'd prefer to have at least a 1st rnd and a 2nd bullet to fire because this one in particular is cracked out the wazoo unless we get a player in their prime or a youngin ready to fly aka Double O/Eason. Rockets are in the apron jump on hehe. Finally pray for Flagg

Yeah, that just isn’t realistic. He should absolutely be shopped this summer should this season continue to go to crap.

Re: Sixers 2024-25 Season Thread Part 1
just trade or fire everyone is the only way Philly fans think teams get better lol.
the best teams in the league all have their cores together for long stretches and there were plenty of times in which there were calls to blow it up.
A large part of of our constant struggles is that we are always trying to mash 5 years of cohesion into 2 weeks because of the roster turnover. IMO half of the current struggles is just dudes not knowing each other that well.
But sure trade Biid, PG, and even Maxey for the small shot at a Biid, PG or even Maxey level talent anmd if that doesn't work ..trade those guys too.
Some of yall pocket watch too much and worry about some nebulous value being lost to time. Biid can't be traded this year. Couldn't be trade in the past due to his contract still being pretty big and probably won't be traded in the future for the same reasons. I get it...you hate him and think he sucks or whatever but I am telling you...to keep whining about it what we should have done or should do in regards to him is a hug waste of time. I suggest you stop watching or at least tell us you are because constantly going "we should have traded him 5 years ago" after every bad game is just silly at this point lol

Re: Sixers 2024-25 Season Thread Part 1
Reasons to talk myself into tanking for a top-6 pick:
Rookie-contract top 50 talent is now at an even bigger premium due to the new CBA.
A top 50 player on a rookie-scale deal is likely more valuable than a top 25 guy on a max.
The org's alpha the last few drafts has been first round selections.
Embiid and PG might benefit health-wise from an off-year.
The talent of top-6 in this draft in particular is rated very highly.
The protections of this year's FRP are 1-6. '
McCain has moved the needle on win-now vs future build mode.

The org's alpha the last few drafts has been first round selections.
Embiid and PG might benefit health-wise from an off-year.
The talent of top-6 in this draft in particular is rated very highly.
The protections of this year's FRP are 1-6. '
McCain has moved the needle on win-now vs future build mode.

the best teams in the league all have their cores together for long stretches and there were plenty of times in which there were calls to blow it up.
I agree with trading the core is a big mistake once it is put together this offseason. I just wouldn't have added PG wihtout knowing his market value to offer him the max as their own team refuse to cough up the money. Essentially we just outbid ourselves for an injury prone player.

Also, any fan who is willing to trade Maxey is beyond foolish. He is the face of our future and part of the Big 3 for obvious reasons cause he can take over games when it matters in clutch situations. It's why he is our untouchable from here on out.

Those best teams you’re referring to (probably the Celtics mostly) actually experienced real success and had half the drama this team has had with Embiid. And yet there was STILL calls to break them up. Don’t see any reason why Embiid should be immune from it. I wouldn’t have traded him this summer as I was all in on this big 3 thing, but if this season goes to chit it’s absolute malpractice to not kick the tires on it this offseason. That doesn’t make anyone a hater if you’re spending precious time and/or hard earned money and tired of it .
always a jump shot away.
