Gotta love the camp reports of what young players are impressing.
Bobby Manning quote today:
“I’ll drop this nugget too, and I was surprised to hear it, one of the more impressive guys in camp : JD Davison” and Manning goes on from there.
4:19 for the JD Davison comments … up til 4:55

Re: Welcome to Boston, JD Davison! – (Signed 3rd yr Two-Way w/Celtics)
I'm gonna revitalize JD's thread.
A rookie, a non drafted signed 2 way and a player you traded for at last years deadline are all suited up to play at home against the Bucks. And JD Davison is gonna suit up for his 3rd straight stint in the G-League.
This has to be the final make it or break it for this kid.
Will Springer get moved at the deadline and JD is brought up to the big club like Neems?

Time for some JDawg apprectiation. JD has only recently turned 22 and he is showing true signs of growth, leadership and skill improvement in Maine for the past two years. Not bad for a 53rd pick.
He may have a ways to go to make it as a regular on the roster in Boston, but for now he's one of the best 4th-string point guards in the league, I'd wager to say. I'd like to see him get some PG minutes with Celtics when they are resting starters, even if it's only for a reality check. His lobs were always good, but he's tightened up his handle and making some timely, crisp passes, getting the system down as the floor general.
He just looks so much more in control than two years ago.

Just seems like JD has a high wall to climb in Boston. First, his defense is substandard. Second, does Joe like his game, hi-pass + middling shooting; it’s an open question? Third, some have raised questions about JDs professionalism, but I don’t know about that.
Personally, I like a pass first, athletically explosive PG but the defense needs to improve or it’s a deal breaker for me.

I have never been a fan of JDs, but he has come a long way this year. Certainly, he is good enough for a 15th roster spot to make sure Jrue and White don't hit to many minutes. I would put him above Springer right now, playing behind Pritchard, White and Jrue. I would like to see a lineup of JD, Scheierman, Walsh, Tilman and Kornet to finish some garbage time at the end of a game.

JD will most likely get a regular contract from the Cs next season.
Definitely will take Springer's spot on the roster.
And yes, he has come a long way this year.

I don't think he'll play in the NBA
He is overwhelmed when playing on the big league - his defense is mediocre at best, he has a ton of TO and his 3pt shooting came a long way but is still a work in progress
He has talent and can be a star in Europe - where his skills that match the playing time needed to perform can shine
I would like to see Springer playing extended minutes before passing judgement. He is not a microwave offense like PP and needs time to impact the game
I would try playing PP. Springer, Walsh, Hauser and Tillman/Kornet/Queta for a full period against a lowly team and see what we have
Playing a minute of garbage time here and there won't tell anything about any player. You can see the progress that kornet and Queta had playing extended minutes. Tillman is next (I like the Tillman as the only big lineup).

Celts will not pay tax for Spring, so he'll most likely get traded on or before deadline.
JD on a minimum contract and as an end of the bench player is not a bad alternative.
I think the Cs see something in him.
Maybe that's why he's still a Celtic.

Not really sure what this is based on?
He's been good in G league, but plenty of guys have been good in g league who never make it in the NBA. Springer was MVP of the G league finals at age 20..something JD has yet to do and he's 22.
JD has been good in g league but he was good in G league last year and the year before that. I don't really see much (if any) progression. He still has yet to get any meaningful mins with the big club. And he often has bad turnovers when he gets a chance for the big club in garbage time.
I think he *might* eventually get a chance to show if he can handle real NBA mins, but I doubt it's in boston..would probably have to be on a bad team like Chicago, Washington, Brooklyn, POrtland, Utah, etc.
Doing it in the g league and doing it in the NBA are very different things.

I just don’t know what there is left to do for JD in the G league. Hes too good for that league but hasn’t been able to even see spot minutes in real time circumstances here. I think hes gotta go to Europe at this point to play stiffer competition or he’s going to be NBA Crash Davis for the rest of his career.

Re: Welcome to Boston, JD Davison! – (Signed 3rd yr Two-Way w/Celtics)
I'm not sure he has to go to Europe yet, but if another team won't give him a chance then probably so. We've got his rights, he's signed, but his trade value isn't high for him to switch teams/circumstances either. This coming off-season we can't sign him to another 2-way deal so I think we'll either sign him to that end of bench spot or another team with more opportunity will come in and do it. I think he's potentially earned that chance. If I'm wrong then yeah Europe for sure for him..

It would be great to see a player move his way form G-League to gradually get that regular contract. Brad and Joe are really into the development pipeline in Maine, so this would be a good confirmation that the strategy can work too.
Tough road for JD though. Next year I suppose we'll have to see what happens with Horford, Porzingis, Springer, maybe Tillman and Kornet. And there is the draft pick.
For PG position, I would think Davison is going to be better than anyone we're going to find at pick #30.

Agree he's only 22 all year this year, my guess is that is below average age for the G-league. Could still be playing college ball and made close to $2M playing in the G-league, what's not to like on his end.
25/5/10 on 60%+ TS with an 11:3 AST:TO ratio, not a bad start for the year.

Funny you mention he could still be in college because I was just thinking that. I'm not really sold on JD, but if a 22 year old were putting up those numbers in college he'd be a late lotto pick for a team who had some injuries, but normally is in the playoffs and wants someone to help them win sooner rather than later as they look to stay healthy the next season and compete. We're drafting 2 guys older than him currently even.

He already ranks first in scoring and in assists. This man is a LEGEND in Maine."
And in Maine, he shall remain? Pretty telling that Cs might not have Holiday & White for the Cavs game while JDD still stays with the Maine club.

It's really terrible, huh? They took Scheierman and Peterson over him, both are not even PG's.
Davison is just a 4A player. Too good for the G League, not good enough for the NBA.
JD is still young, so he may get a chance. Elsewhere.

We don’t really even care about him in Portland lol.
He’s made some progress but how he turns the ball over hasn’t really been any different since we was a rookie. Still a deer in the headlights. Fantastic athlete, but that’s all he offers.
And I’ve said it before but damn he’s smaller than listed.

Still think jd needs a chance with good players. Don’t think he’s ever getting it here and may not in the NBA. Going to keep watching and cheering him on. Hopefully if he’s forced overseas we can get some info now and then that he’s doing well.

That would be roster malpractice IMO. They can draft a senior PG in the draft who can contribute more than JD IMO. Stevens has shown that he's a loyal boss who will give his employee the most opportunities to succeed. Walsh and JD are perfect opposite examples. JD just isn't an NBA player. If there was gonna be a year for a euro team to take a shot with JD it was after last season. His stock was pretty high because he had the stats, he was in a good organization but this seasons camp shown he didn't get better. Now he's just a points leader for a G-League team. Look at the G-League stats leaders. It's exactly who they are, G-League stats leaders, that's it.
Did you see my game against you guys the other night? Not bad shooting the 3 ball for a 7ftr.
