Serious Question:

Do we think Phoenix asked us to do this as a favor so they could get another player in Free Agency...and yet we didn't get even a future 2nd Round Pick for our troubles?

I think so. Mentioned it on the squawk and go poo-pooed for 'taking shots at Landry'
We saved Phoenix tax money and in doing so allowed them to sign Tyus.

I thought this once I saw the trade, searched their contracts, and their stats. They made what to me is a big play in free agency at a great price.

Hawks have too much young talent to be on this list. No where to tumble when the expectation is a similar to last season 35 wins

I take the over on that for next season and look forward to the development of OO, DD, ZR, KB, MG, JJ....

Trae has things to work with and a team to mold to his talents

I look for the LAL pick to be late lotto like #13 and SAC pick at around #17 and ATL pick to SA at #11. LAL is banking on a thin roster and an injury could change everything

Code: Select all

While the Lakers are not going to be as bad as teams like the Wizards, Nets, Blazers and some others, the Western Conference is brutal and you don't have to be too creative when thinking of ways that the Lakers miss the playoffs and are in the lottery. That makes the pick one of the most valuable future picks in the NBA, but where exactly does it land amongst the other picks that are owed?

CBS Sports NBA analyst Sam Quinn recently wrote about this and ranked the pick No. 13 in terms of future picks owed:

"The Lakers are better than the Hawks, but have far more upside from a draft perspective. They're in the Western Conference, they're old, they have a rookie head coach and they're pressing up against the second apron, so fortifying the roster in a trade would be difficult. Atlanta's median outcome is probably higher, but the Lakers have more room to completely combust."

Predicting six NBA teams to improve or decline in the 2024-25 season

Los Angeles Lakers
2023-24 record: 47-35
ESPN BET win total: 43.5

Image

Having brought back nearly their entire roster -- rookies Dalton Knecht and Bronny James are the lone newcomers on full NBA contracts -- the Lakers could be the purest test of these predictive factors. The Lakers had the biggest positive gap of any team last season between their expected and actual record at 4.5 games, going a league-best 11-4 in games decided by three points or fewer. No other team had more than nine wins by three or fewer.

As Lakers fans would surely point out, they actually lost 28% more games due to injury or non-COVID illness than the NBA average, but those absences were disproportionately concentrated among role players -- guard Gabe Vincent was notably limited to 11 games. Stars Anthony Davis and LeBron James combined to play 147 games after averaging just 103.5 the previous two seasons.

Of teams that outperformed their expected record by between four and five games, 61% declined the next season. Add in the likelihood that Davis and James miss more time, and a win total 3.5 games below last season's finish makes sense.
