i never knew that, i wonder if that's just for the tournament scoring or if the regular season always counts point differential like that.

That was deliberately changed from last year to this season. They didn't want a team that needed to win their last game by 8 but was only ahead by a little late in the 4th to deliberately tank for OT and the chance of a higher MOV.

I don't think they bother for the regular season as total point differential is so unlikely to matter.

I only now noticed that west groups are set up in a way that pits TX against CA. You could have all three TX teams advance, or all three CA teams, or anything in between.

Tuesday has two big games to decide the Eastern lineup: NYK/ORL & MIL/DET. All four are 3-0 in group play, while only Atlanta of all teams in Group C has clinched. The Magic have a +60 point differential going into MSG, so they could be secure either way. If they beat the Knicks, then the loser of MIL/DET could be likely for the wild card spot.

If Orlando beats New York and the Pistons/Bucks game is close on Tuesday... the East will have Orlando (missing its star player), Atlanta, Detroit, and the Bucks as the four teams representing the CUP from the East. That's probably about the worst case scenario for the NBA.... if Boston, NY, Miami, Cleveland (after that great start), etc all miss out on the CUP. At least in the West they have some star power with Curry and maybe Wemby.

Well, it would mean Orlando is the better team if they beat NY at NY

Well, thats the NBA fault for not having better coverage of every NBA team, instead of a select few.

I have never understood the marginalization of every NBA team, save for a select few.

I just realized that there’s a massive ten day gap between regular games while they do the cup final. Doesn’t that seem incredibly excessive? Quarter final wraps on the 11th and then there are three days without games before the semis and then two more off days before the final. You don’t have that much space between games even in the playoffs. I understand Silver wants it to matter but this seems like it stiffs the viewers for the sake of trying to make their stupid tournament seem more important than it is. It’s not that important. It means nothing. Just let us watch basketball.
