Challenge: Find a House Made of (for) Klay
Disclaimer: I had to go into the office on this cold day, so I needed a thread to help the time pass in an intriguing way.
I was in the camp that Jason Kidd should have started the preseason with a competition between Klay, Naji Marshall, and Q Grimes for the starting SF spot. Klay has not done a thing in recent years to be handed a starting job, especially with a brand-new team. So far, the start of the season has shown that he's not the best fit with both Luka/Kyrie, but seems to be better with just one of them. Whereas Naji and Grimes are starting to piece it together and gel well.
So the challenge is, where can Dallas trade Klay and recoup some value? Obviously, they're not getting picks or anything of merit, but maybe a bench scorer or backup PF for a similar salary. Any suggestions?

Everyone makes amends in the bay.
Melton + Waters III
Expiring money, tiny bit of savings, and a guy who can fill in for the season for Dallas (Waters).

Why don’t they just make him a 6th man?
It’s clear that he can still be a pure shooter. The starters can be hustle players around Ky/Luka. Bring Klay as instant offense, play the same mins as now.

Re: Challenge: Find a House Made of (for) Klay
I think he'd be an ideal 6th man ala Jason Terry. The problem is he's shown no indication that he'd be willing to accept such a role. It seems like the guy still thinks he's prime Klay when you hear how he felt disrespected by Golden State who really treated him like a superstar.
If he can be a 6th man without causing an issue, awesome, but if not, I'd like to see a trade.
Would Orlando and BKN do this?
Klay to Orl
DFS to Dallas
Cole Anthony and 2 Orl 2nds to BKN

I think the Lakers would still take him, but it would be Dlo coming back. Dlo's expiring + 2nds is probably more enticing for tanking teams looking to sell vets.

Perhaps, and if thats the case, Dallas should walk away. I've just heard a lot how Cole Anthony does not have a place in Orl and how they need shooting, so thought this was a deal they'd consider.

i wouldnt add value to a anthony for klay swap personally, though the idea has some merit (I like a kcp for klay based trade more though). my qualm is mostly that i think DFS > Klay in value

This is really the crux of the issue. Klay would probably still be in Golden State if he was willing to accept that he's a role player now and adjust his expectations accordingly.
I will always love Klay and hope he gets a statue outside Chase one day, but I don't see him playing for us again except for maybe a one-year vet min victory lap before he retires.

Is this the Bogut situation where he has to go elsewhere first? Or did they write that out of the rules?
Make it a 2 stepper with someone looking to deal a meh guy for expirings (Melton/Waters). Utah with Clarkson could work, but I doubt that's what Dallas would be looking for.

He was mostly out of the closing lineup already before his injury. Now I have no idea if he is causing issues on that, but closing lineups seem a better indication of how Kidd values him than starting lineups.
The other strange thing is Dallas has been a slow starting team up to until this latest 8 of 9 run anyway, but Klay despite being part of those lineups has a pretty solid positive on court. Not sure what to make of that data.
I hope nobody expected a world beater when he was signed. This is an aging guy who had serious injuries that took a long time to come back from. He's still a very good shooter with good size and a great release. He's not the individual defender he used to be. He's still pretty clearly an upgrade over THJ which is what he was signed to be.
If Grimes can keep playing like this, there is no issue. He will close games in place of Klay. Klay, however can continue to contribute the spacing he was brought here to do. And if he becomes the problem the OP is certain he will--well the one the Mavs organization does better than any other in the Association is admit mistakes and pivot. But I'm not solving a problem that might not exist.

Minnesota could see if Dallas falls for the ol' Julius Randle is an All-NBA player trick (that they just fell for themselves) - Klay/PJ for Randle.

PJ Washington is the defensive backbone of the Mavs. I dont think they'd ever pursue Randle but if they did, it wouldnt be at the expense of PJ

Yeah Klay or no Klay I wouldn't trade PJ for Randle straight up.

Lively is probably the backbone? But yeah Washington gets the tough assignments and I think brings a mentality the team feeds off. Seems like a bad idea to swap him for Randle when you have Luka/Kyrie and then a couple of other offensive creators in Dinwiddie and Marshall. Offensive creation isn't a big need atm.

I agree they shouldn't (Minnesota certainly shouldn't've), but that's why it's a trick
