Unless they suddenly change their program, then it’s like Scooby Doo. They pull off the Warren Mask, and reveal that it’s been Ted Phillips all along. As Barstool said.

The 49ers roster has a lot of significant money tied up to very injury prone players and are about to have to pay a good but not great QB 50ish million dollars. While in Chicago, our roster is 90% elite (need a pass rusher, OL, and development of Williams) but that’s something Shanahan can fix with poles.
I’m close to becoming delusional about how realistic it is for us to land Shanahan. Especially if Williams goes out there and has the best game of the season
I just don't get why you'd give up all that draft capital on a coach when you can hire someone like Ben Johnson. Two FRP's is a major loss of good young talent, if that's what it would take.

This strikes me as more gossip. We don't know why Warren might have said that, IF he even said that. Jumping to conclusions based on a things like this is unwise, IMO.

I haven't really considered what it would take but I don't think it would take two firsts. I believe it was a 2nd and late 1st for Sean Payton so I would guess it would be the same.
And as much as I love Ben Johnson, there's a major difference between being a top 3 coach in the NFL and a potential HOFer vs being hopeful that the guy you hire turns out to be that guy. its like, would you trade two 1st for Mahomes or draft Williams.
I would have to think long and hard about giving up two firsts but a coach like Shanahan is probably worth it.

The first thing that struck me here is Dan McNeil seems like an unlikely guy to have this scoop before others, but who knows.

It's not like this idea would be some big stretch; not really even newsworthy to me. Warren and Harbaugh would be very familiar with each other from their Big 10 days. To think that a head coach and a Commissioner might not have been on the best of terms isn't hard to fathom.

I agree 100%. This is the season of revision being that we just fired our coach. So it’s popular to talk about what could have been when the overwhelming likelihood is that it probably wouldn’t have been.
Additionally, everyone with even a remedial level of football knowledge knew that Harbaugh wanted to go back to Cali and the he was absolutely smitten with Herbert. So it’s just as likely that if Warren put the breaks on it, it was because he saw a rope-a-dope coming.

Sure - I find it completely believable, I just don't trust Dan McNeil as a reliable news-breaker.

I will say it again. Harbaugh ended up exactly where he wanted to be. It would have taken an insane offer from another team (the Bears included) in order for him to not take the LAC job.

I don't hate Warren. But he's too often exceeding his skill set. He's a smooth talking, connected, "politician-like" upper level management type, He could be running a football team or a company making golf clubs. His role is to lobby Illinois politicians into approving the Bears plans for a stadium and to find 3rd party money to build it. He should have no role is determining who the coaches are or what players they draft or wish to sign. He can have input on the salaries for players and coaches, acting on behalf of the McCaskeys. But leave the personnel decisions to the real football people. The most input on the next coach should be from Poles, his staff, and Caleb. Our future success rides on the shoulders of #18. Give him some say in who is gonna be coaching this team going forward. We can' waste any more seasons. Once Caleb's rookie deal is over then our remaining roster will have to be pared back considerably to pay for it within the confines of the salary cap. So Warren, stay in your office. We'll call you when we need you.

No. His ship has sailed. Ben Johnson should be our #1 Target. Joe Brady should be the #2 target. If they don't pass the screening, or aren't interested (doubtful) then bring in Kellen Moore, Thomas Brown and Kliff Kingsbury.

We don't really know how involved Warren is going to be. I wouldn't say there's no role for him in the coaching search. It might help just to have another set of eyes and ears during the interview process to gauge how someone comes across. Warren is likely more PR savvy than Poles, and we've seen how important that is. He also might catch things Poles overlooks- Warren has a lot of experience at a high organizational level, and that can be useful.

fleet wrote:Not quite worried, but whatever has been causing Rome to be running different routes, or 3/4 like on the final play on Thanksgiving needs to get fixed 100%. However, in a world where trading down for Brock Bowers was an option, maybe I get a little curious.
It's been my worry with Rome since he was drafted. Typically, you're #1 as a HoF level prospect WR, or you are a diamond found in the 2nd round and on.
I didn't agree with taking Bowers because we already had Kmet. I'm not sure Bowers does better here since we didn't like using the TE at all.
With that stated, my hope for Rome's improvement comes from Keenan being gone next year. But yeah, everytime I see Rome play, I'm left desiring a lot more.
