What’s the deal with Sims?
He has pretty quick feet and hands which combined with his athleticism provide nice potential defensively. That’s not to say he doesn’t have room for improvement as he needs to learn to not bite on fakes and use his quickness and length more effectively.
Offensively, he is absolutely dreadful. He has a hard time setting screens without committing an offensive foul. When he does set a decent screen, defenses leave him open because he may actually have worse hands than Nerlens Noel.
Those stone hands also prevent him from being a good rebounder. He’s resorted to tipping the ball out because he knows he can’t grab anything.
Does he have potential to be anything more than a 3rd stringer with these issues?

you can't compare Sims' paws to Noel's paddles.

He has a hard time holding onto the ball. He also doesn’t have any awareness of where he’s at, in respect to the basket.

Re: What’s the deal with Sims?
They actually published an interesting stat. Sims currently leads the NBA in terms of lowest FG% at the rim when he's guarding that player. It's at 33%. The next closest is over 40%. Sure it's only in about 13-14 minutes a game but for a role player that's pretty good.
Overall I think Sims problem is that he needs to be more of a junkyard dog. He's still too hesitant and too nice. With his physical tools and size he should be like Danny Fortson type in terms of mentality and physicality. Older folks will remember Fortson. He was consistently rated as the guy that players least wanted to go body up against cause he was just a nasty physical dude that didn't back down and didn't take **** from nobody. Same with a guy like Isaiah Stewart.
To which, from the way back machine...
Fortson wasn't the most skilled player but he was the toughest...a dirty dog.

I think the Sims' ship has sailed now that Precious is back and Mitch is en route to return. Sims had a nice little run with some solid defense and hustle plays but we have more impactful players now. Thank you, Sims, for your laid back effort.

He might have a chance. If the FO feels like Sims is ready, they might move Mitch and someone for a wing, and then extend Sims like McBride.
I say this as someone who appreciates Mitch.

Re: What’s the deal with Sims?
Sims is worth the development, but it's clear he's 3rd string now with Precious back.

Re: What’s the deal with Sims?
Don’t think we’ll ever see a pair of hands as bad as Nerlens lmao. Sims hands is nowhere near that bad. We would be sweating whenever anyone even through a lob to Nerlens lol
He’s a backup C tho. Not bad for the last pick in the draft. Could be a rotation player if he could score a little

He has had enough time to develop to show us more if he was going to be more.
You saw Mitch improve year by year in everything except shooting. And early on he showed tremendous flashes of an elite menacing defender. And while no jumpshot he showed he could play decently at the rim with a semblence of understanding how to rebound and score.
Sims is what he is at this point. A guy who can with his length be pretty good at rim protecting and a few rebounds here and there but he gives you almost nothing else. Very low BBIQ. Terrible hands. Terrible timing. Usually unable to score with people around him unless sey up perfectly.
It's not a coincidence that Sims minutes went to almost zero when Precious came back. Sims is unfortunately one of the many in a long line of looks like Tarzan plays like Jane examples.

Re: What’s the deal with Sims?
Not everybody can be developed into a good player or we'd all be in the NBA. That's why the rotation is so short, Thibs wants to play some of these guys as much as fans wanted more Elfrid Payton minutes.

Re: What’s the deal with Sims?
Sims for many reasons felt like a step back in terms of gameplay.
Severally lacks gameplay in comparison with the previous three bigs.
His personality falls really flat for me.
He lacks depth and richness in gameplay.
I'm not randomly ranting here: those are informed takes.
These are my sources
Unarguable.
