TOR-HOU: Kelly Olynyk to the Rockets

Post#1 » by MessiahUjiri » Sun Dec 8, 2024 8:18 pm

This is based on the posts that the Rockets are looking for a good backup PF-C.

Olynyk just made his season debut, and he looks very fresh, just in time for trade season.

Here’s a trade;

Kelly Olynyk + ‘26 TOR 2nd
for
‘25 1st (the weird DEN/PHX one) + Steven Adams

Essentially, this is saying that Olynyk plus a 2nd = a 1st.

Landale and 2nds would be my top offer, and I love Olynyk.

I liked KO when he was with us a few years ago, but Adams has gotten better lately, so this is not a good use of our assets.

Seconds not a first. Plus, Oly adds salary to next year cap.

Should have $30 mil plus $44 more if Vleet not picked up.

you're at 130M or so for ~9 players not including FVV. cap space is tentatively 155 or so next year w/ the 10% raise over this year.

yeah they punted on cap space next year, still doesn't make this not an overpay, PHX pick has a ton of variance, it's currently 13th!

$25 mil. $30 when not picking up holiday.
I doubt vleet will want to play on expiring so $74 million.
Might redo Vleet or go for Ingram etc.
but, first choice is star package.

Plus, with new rules, cap space is critical to make deals. For instance, the only way to trade a poison pill guy right now is to include Detroit’ $10 mil or use trade exceptions.

Feels more like Toronto would have to add in PDX's 2nd this year, which should be around #35, and the DEN/PHX pick would have to be lotto protected in case Phoenix falls apart or Jokic tears his ACL tomorrow. Also Landale instead of Steven Adams. I don't see Houston doing it, but the value is definitely closer.

Olynyk just isn't worth this. I know we want every player on our team not in our future plans to have significant value, but they mostly do not. These are the players you offer up hoping to get a 2nd or two. And if you aren't satisfied with his actual value, that's cool. He's not a terrible guy to have around a rebuilding team(why they traded for him and re-signed him).

This is within range of reason IMHO, the 1st we're talking about is probably like a 20s pick given how things are looking right now.

Obviously there might be some haggling around the margins, and there are some assumptions that is built in of how things will look by the deadline though. (I.e Adams still isn't playing well, Olynek is still healthy, Houston clearly looking like they'll finish ahead of Clippers etc. )

Houston basically have zero seconds right now, which is a bit problematic in terms of trading chips going forward not to mention general flexibility, they would probably be interested in trades that get them some seconds.

The marginal value of a late first for Houston by the end of the season is fairly blah given their roster spots. So I actually think they have a reasonable chance of trading it. and this one, at least you can make a case for where the value is close to being fair.

Put top 20 protection on the 1st, rolls into 2 2nds and then it’s probably good enough to still get the Raps to bite. For Houston probably a worthwhile gamble at that point, even if a first in the low 20s is an overpay.

Missed that. Just a handful of seconds and some cash then.

I think the Raps keep him given they have no one to replace him next year. No need to trade him unless someone does offer more than expected.
