Deni is a keeper... Can we all agree on that. So I ask myself, is he a PF or SF, and the bigger question... Who would pair nicely with him at the other forward position?

Like Deni a lot, he just brings intensity\effort every time he plays. The fact that he is only 3-1/2 months older than Dalton Knecht, whom many fans would have been ecstatic if POR had drafted at #14 is pretty unreal. I'd much rather have a player of Deni's skillset than Knecht. especially given the positional difference (b\c this team desperately needs shooting).

I think Deni is probably best suited as a PF, he has a very strong\thick build and his 3pt shot (32.9%) is probably a little lower than you would like for a SF, although I think one of the strengths of Deni is his positional versatility. I think given the matchup he could swing anywhere along the front line, including small ball center as he did admirably earlier this year. Put a sharp shooting 3&D SF next to him and you are set at the forward position (with Camara coming off the bench as 1st back-up at forward)

Rui, unlike Grant COULD be that guy, as he's built to play in the paint on defense, and can stretch the floor on the offensive side with a very capable 3pt shot. Plus, there aren't a whole lot of players in the league stronger and tougher than this kid. His BBIQ is actually quite high having come out of Gonzaga, and fits the Blazers culture perfectly. He also came from Washington before joining Faker Nation, so I think he and Deni may have (not sure) already played some together.

Rui is ok, I like the shooting, but he is a slightly undersized PF (smaller than Deni) who doesn't have the build like Deni to guard other bigs very effectively. What is good about him is his outside shooting, which this team needs. Could it work in POR? Deni @ SF, Rui @ PF, yes, but not ideal IMO. I would have some defensive concerns for sure

Is an interesting video that addresses trends in the league. I think Deni's best fit is as the future PF for the Blazers.

I agree, all the more reason for POR to divest from Grant sooner, rather than later. Start Deni @ PF, then start\rotate Camara\Murray\whomever until one of them or draft pick\acquired player fill that role permanently.

I am VERY surprised that Shaedon has been struggling so much with his shot this year

It's really his 3pt shot that is hurting his overall shooting %. He needs to focus more on driving\mid range, especially while he is struggling from 3pt.

99 3pt attempts already, and he is shooting 28.3%, thru 16g LY he was 31.8% (91 att), so 3.5% down.
His rookie season? Thru 16games, 42 attempts, 42.8%.

So half as many attempts and his % is 14% better. You add too that his points per 2ptFG this year are up to 1.08 (.91 LY), but predictably his points per 3ptFG are at .82 (1.0 LY, 1.08 his rookie season).

Clearly needs to focus on 2pt shooting (drives\mid range) and take fewer 3pt shots until it starts to come around (or more likely until he can work on it in the offseason).

100% correct. We need a deadly shooter to fit with team to space the floor though.

Particularly at the SF spot, at least until Sharpe\Scoot can prove they can be at minimum league average from beyond the arc,
which just makes the fascination with wing players who cannot shoot all the more bewildering.

I dont care what trends say, common sense would indicate rebounding at the 4 is pretty important. At least 8 rebounds a game ideally around 10. Maybe deni can hit that 8 number who knows but that's something that would indicate to me whether or not he could be a 4

Deni's current rebound rate per 40 is 8.8, it was 9.6 the last 2 years

This year, his ORB% is 4.1% (58% percentile), DRB% is 16.46% (73rd percentile). LY ORB% 3.6% - DRB% 19.18%

Great post!

100% agree on the SF shooter. I love the idea of Ace Bailey, but I don't think he's going to be an option.

Maybe Knueppel?

I love the idea of a shooter but the real move is BPA basically anywhere outside C.

I am not sure we have more than 2 long term starters on this team - Deni and Donovan.

There likely isn't a knock-down shooter that will be available (or at least isn't a reach where the Blazers pick)...especially a SF/PF. I like Alex Karaban as a second rounder...same with Mackenzie Mgbako as a C&S guy, although he looks a little stiff as an athlete.

I do think this draft has some intriguing wing shooters in it, but I am also of the mind that wherever POR picks go BPA. If that is a PG\SG\PF or SF (I don't see any centers). I would REALLY like to see POR get another 25' draft pick. I can't see any teams trading lottery 1st's, but maybe a pick in the 20's could be realistic. That would be #1. #2 would be acquiring a 25' 2nd rounder. Also, could be doable.

Maybe Knueppel?

Depending where POR is picking, let's say they are in the #6-#9 range. I am not sure I would lean Kneuppel over a few of the other players that could be on the board:

Jakucionis would be hard to pass on I think
I think Traore is being undervalued, as quoted below, huge step up to Pro A, 2nd best league in basketball at age 18.

NBA teams have an interesting challenge of weighing Nolan Traore's pre-2024 Saint-Quentin tape with his current struggles and age-18 production in Pro A.

If Demin is there, I think you have to take a hard look at him

I think if those players were gone then McNeeley would be another, comparison b\t him and Kneuppel would be worth looking at

BPA.

Preferably not a C, but the best talent we can get. Unfortunately no one on this team is good enough to own a spot in the lineup despite the draftee.

Taken from another message board, but yikes....

nba.com power rankings;

"Over the last five seasons (since 2020-21), the Blazers have now lost 10 games by at least 40 points, with no other team having more than four losses by 40-plus over that stretch."

"This season’s Blazers are now 8-16 with the point differential (minus-9.6 per game, third worst) of a team that’s 5-19"

The way Grant has played and his length of contract makes me think we are going to be in a tough spot in terms of trading him.

I really only think RWIII will have a market. The new CBA has changed the landscape. I think moving guys like Simons and Grant will be quite rough.

Royce O'Neale jumps out at me on that list. He has the shooting the Blazers need.

Maybe something around Timelord for Royce.

I love timelord but his injury history is scary for a thin team like the Suns who lack big men.

How about Grayson Allen who is a really good 3pt shooter which is something you guys need? We have a glut of guards and a lack of big men that can rebound and defend the paint.

Why do you prefer to trade Grayson over Royce? I get it that Royce is older and on a better contract than Grayson...but Grayson's contract makes a trade more difficult from Portland's perspective. Either way, Robert Williams would be coming back to PHX.

The shooting of either would be a help for the Blazers, but there aren't many guard minutes to be had on the Blazers with Scoot/Simons/Sharpe all needing playing time.

Multiple teams have begun expressing interest in a group of Portland's veterans -- Jerami Grant, Anfernee Simons and Robert Williams III -- as the Trail Blazers make decisions on the roster, sources said.

No mention of Ayton, can't say I am surprised.

Blazers will probably just have to eat the last year and a half of Ayton. Might be a nice EC next year or over the summer for a team that just needs a stopgap

A couple of other interesting notes to keep track of

After losing centers James Wiseman and Isaiah Jackson to Achilles tendon tears, the Pacers are actively pursuing a backup 5, sources said.

Could be a surprise option for RW3 or Reath?

The Nets have received trade interest and opened exploratory conversations around forwards Cam Johnson and Dorian Finney-Smith and guard Dennis Schroder, sources said.

Competition, surprised Cam Thomas is not on this list, good for POR if they want to deal Simons.Mentions GSW as most interested

2 biggest names so far, appear to be Jimmy Butler (slightly surprised) and Brandon Ingram

Both Butler and Ingram are essentially in contract seasons.

The Heat are open to listening to offers for Butler and making a deal if the proposal is right,

Given the way the Dame\MIA went down, I have to imagine they want a huge return, which may not be there. I could see GSW though, as later he mentions GSW is looking for a Star, and they are on their list. I would imagine Kuminga and picks? Maybe another young player (Podz?)

Teams have also been informed that Butler intends to opt out of his deal in the offseason and become a free agent,

This makes some sense why MIA would entertain. The issue is, like Ingram. What teams that he likes are going to have the cap space to sign these guys?

Maybe GSW? If they renounced\traded away Kuminga & Looney?

SA maybe? If they let Paul walk

Because of their financial situation, the Pelicans are unlikely to reach Ingram's current salary annually on an extension, making the trade route much more likely than a long-term deal, league sources said. New Orleans values Ingram highly, though, and is expected to keep the extension door open with him, those sources said.

Ingram\Klutch asking for $50mil\yr

The Pelicans, already over the luxury tax line this season, are facing higher salary cap bills for years to come.

God bless the NBA. Wild money for a guy who can't ever stay healthy and can't lead a team to anything.

The Pelicans and Heat need to blow it up on both their rosters. They're stuck in the mediocrity mud.

I look at it slightly differently. Clingan/Ayton is a solid C rotation. Just use Ayton in that role. Having lots of expiring deals at the endo of the 25-26 season could be very helpful (unless the FO does something tremendously stupid).

Don't get me wrong, if you could move Ayton, Simons, Williams or Thybulle for draft assets, you do it. But it isn't horrible if you can't - just not optimal.

FWIW, Mike Richmond on his POD mentions that the "$1 over = hard-cap at the first apron" rule in the new CBA is making it basically impossible for anyone other than Reath to be traded.

He also points out that trade restriction trades are pretty rare historically...usually only 1 or sometimes 2 within the year. He expects any Blazer trade to happen after Jan 1st.

In other words, likely no need to hold on to our shorts.

Yeah you guys have a glut of shooting guards also I realized.

We only have Royce as our full time power forward and no one really behind him besides Oso who is a rookie and unproven while we have a glut of shooting guards which is a problem because we tend to run 3 shooting guards at the same time which is a disaster for interior defense and rebounding.

Maybe we need a 3 team trade but with the salary cap restrictions on the 1st and 2nd apron trades are just going to be very difficult or even impossible when salaries need to match 100 percent for teams over the salary cap.

I am all on board with trading Ayton however, he has one year left and $35 mil due next offseason, yet I doubt he could fetch something of value, given this new CBA world.

Now if a team wants to offer something of even minor value for him, by all means, trade him away, but using draft assets\other players\taking on ugly contracts just to be rid of him is a mistake IMO.

A quote from Bull Durham seems appropriate here "Million dollar body (potential), $.10 head" He just does not care, he got his bag and he just does whatever he wants, and up until a few games ago, he faced ZERO repercussions. That being said, I don't think he is the type of player who can sink the morale of the entire team, nor do I think current players like Camara\Deni\Clingan are going to be infected by his antics. all (3) of those guys are hard effort, no BS, type players. So, even if his attitude goes south next year, so what? You bench him, and then use his fat $35mil contract to get whatever assets you can from him. Either way, he will not be in POR after next season.

The guys to trade RIGHT NOW are:

RW3, has value to playoff teams, keep him upright and then trade him

Grant, does not have a great contract, but on a better team his play (as 3rd/4th option) would be accentuated.

Simons, he is clearly not a #1, I don't know how Cronin ever even saw that as a reality, but he DOES have value as 6th man to a playoff-caliber team, and his contract, while slightly more than he is worth is washed by the years of obligation (1, after this year) and his age (25).

Shams said it today, teams are inquiring about these players. Do I think this is coming from POR, maybe? But I do not think it is out of the realm of possibility, that other teams are actually interested in these players, IN DIFFERENT ROLES than they are forced into on this team. A poster said it a few days ago, teams don't view these players under the same short-term microscope that fans do. I agree with this sentiment. I am not saying that POR can extract MAX value for these guys (Ant\Grant) but, (1) 1st or a young player is totally a realistic return IMO, if only Cronin would be OPEN to the possibility (unlike Olshey).

Return to Portland Trail Blazers
