Get ORL a backcourt playmaker who can score

Post#1 » by Skybox » Tue Dec 10, 2024 3:58 am

Franz & Paolo are huge, agile, super versatile young offensive studs. But they can only, realistically, do so much. They are the beginning and end of ORL’s playmaking and they are both 6’10 forwards. Add that to ORL’s elite defense and they can be good, but solvable- particularly in a playoff series. Those two are, perhaps, good enough to prosper without a traditional PG in the starting lineup…when Suggs & KCP are hitting open 3’s, ORL can be tough to beat. Anthony Black has shown some playmaking potential but not enough to count on. His defense is already elite and I’d be very reluctant to include him.

But, to become serious playoff threats, I think they need a backcourt scoring threat/playmaker…probably off the bench, but getting significant minutes and often closing games. They don’t need a Dame or Harden. Just a guy who is a threat to go off for 30, if the defense dares him…but who probably averages 16-18 ppg. Malik Monk, as a FA, would have been a great fit.

The “likely available” guys that come to mind…generally from tanking teams or caught in the middle teams with unclear direction…
- Dennis Schroder
- Anfernee Simons
- Collin Sexton
- CJ McConnell
- Malcolm Brogdon
- Jordan Poole
-Coby White

ORL has all of their own picks plus DEN 25…Cole Anthony going out with one more guaranteed year, Gary Harris expiring, Jett Howard could be available, along with some min guys like Caleb Houstan. Don’t expect ORL to desperately empty the vault for an overpaid, empty stats on a bad team guy. This is specifically bargain shopping for a limited but good fitting piece to accept a lesser role in a winning young environment. Likely trade partners should be looking for short deals and, especially, draft equity

CJ is my dark horse…just because he’s the one who may be most likely to play, on occasion, at an All-Star level…even if older and highly paid. He’s also a solid vet & mentor. Schroder is also intriguing as a Team Germany player and an expiring deal.

Who’s the right one? Who’d I leave out?

CJ Mcconnell would be a good player if he existed. Like TJ Mcconnell but capable of shooting like CJ Mccollum

My favorite is Sexton. Babyjax13 and I have agreed that one 1st, Harris, Cole and a couple of 2nds is decent value. I am just waiting for him to contact Danny Ainge.

I've heard that Bradley Beal guy might be available. Phoenix would hate to have to move him but can be convinced I'm sure.

He's also a former Gator so basically a local.....

ORL doesn’t have guys to salary match without disassembly of their core…which they shouldn’t do for an older, oft-injured making obscene money. I don’t think ORL would include Isaac, so would be tough to assemble. I also don’t know that Beal would accept the realistic hierarchy.

Not saying Orlando would or should do this, but KCP/Cole Anthony/Gary Harris works $-wise once Dec. 15th passes.

KCP+Black+ FRP(unprotected) for Bane..?

Bane seems to have lost his prominence a bit this year (I don't know the reasons, just looking at the stat sheet)..and he would fit like a glove..timeline+skill set...

Magic continues with

WCJ+Harris+Bitadze+Howard+FRP for Claxton+Milton

Claxton/Mo
Paolo/Isaak
Wagner/Da Silva
Bane/Milton
Suggs/Cole
Old Mike Lorenzo

I think it should be Sexton. Good and young enough, contract doesn’t impact their books for their young stars. And Utah is tanking and Ainge should be open.

Maybe a KCP for D'Lo swap as the basis of the deal could make some sense.

D'Angelo Russell has his flaws but he's an awesome playmaker and shooter and Orlando has the exact pieces you want to minimize his weaknesses, which is point of attack defense. And D'Lo would really lift the offense.
KCP is fine as a 3s/D guard, but Orlando isn't lacking in that department and he's kinda struggled this season. Perhaps they have a bit of buyer's remorse? LAL could use a 3s/D guard to pair next to Reaves too.

Sexton , Schroeder , Coby white.

Get one of those 3. Probably at most cause you a protected first and some seconds.

The advantage Sexton presents is that he'd be a 6MOY candidate should the Magic decide to use him in that role when everyone comes back from injury. Brogdon is probably the better bandaid in terms of commited cap space, but an injury risk himself. Simons isn't the best PG of the group, but is the best outside shooter.

I think White makes sense. He's a great kid and can score. His defense is not great, but he's improved some.
Harris/Den pick/Howard for CWhite/Port pick?

Schroder is the obvious pick if I'm Orlando.

I agree with your description of the problem, and I strongly agree that the shortcomings in the back court make Orlando "solvable" in the playoffs. However, I think Orlando needs a starter-level PG, someone who is also going to close those tight playoff games. My concern with targeting a backup-level PG is that, come playoff time, a backup will probably be sitting when it matters and not really make a difference.

Of the options listed, I think Sexton and White are the only ones close to good enough to make a dent in Orlando's current playoff ceiling, but I'd be aiming higher at the Fox-Garland-FVV tier of guards.

Once a year when two fans of opposing teams agree on the same trade, and it's like "Call it in!!! And bring on the step-brothers memes!!"

I kind of like it as well but curious on how Cole Anthony and Colin Sexton differ. Sexton just better of the two, more PG-y?

I think it could've been Lavine but the Magic can't swallow that contract and pay their young players in this new apron era. Unfortunate for the Bulls but I really don't think any team can swallow that contract at this point.

Sexton is the one who makes a ton of sense, is a fantastic scorer, good teammate, and on a great contract. Coby White also makes sense but the Bulls will likely ask too much for him compared to what the Jazz will take for Sexton...just a guess. Now that Ainge/Smith got Dybantsa to BYU and the state of Utah, you just know it's going to be a 2 year tank for them.

Sexton is way more skilled, efficient scorer. He's always been able to get to the FT line but he's making 3's at a very high level and taking more of them. He used to mainly take catch and shoot 3's but now he can make them off the dribble. His assist numbers have improved under Hardy in Utah. He's a combo guard but can create his own shot and has become really good at getting the ball to the bigs in Utah for easy baskets. One of the fastest players in the league.

Defense will always be the issue due to his size but he will at least hustle and get steals and loose balls.

Would love to add Cam Johnson but have my reservations about Schroeder. If orlando really wanted Schroeder we would have signed him to a very friendly contract last season. There is a reason every team he signs with wants to trade him. Also he has extensive exp playing alongside Wagner brothers. Im sure weltman has the inside scoop on him and its prob not good. Also don't think Schroeder is that much upgrade from Cole Anthony.
