2 years ago this week we sacked Steven Gerrard. Can't imagine thinking even in the best of circumstances, that we could be sitting atop the Champions league table in a short 2 years after. King Emery has done a magical job.

If I was told we'd have Watkins, Mings, Kamara, Ramsey, Digne, Cash, Buendia etc on the bench for a Champions League game in 2024, I would have laughed my ass off

I'm not trying to downplay what you've said, because you're correct. Villa has come a long way in a few years. And I am happy for such a shakeup.

I will simply add, outside of Bayern Munich, who are not the defending Bundesliga champions, wins over Young Boys and Bologna were expected, at least I hope Villa fans thought as much.

I know exactly what you mean and agree, 2 of those games should have been won by us, but very few people had us a chance to beat Bayern. And there will absolutely be harder games and poorer results, but from where we've come, this is incredible.

And at the end of the day, you can only beat, who you play.

Since the start of the season, the only game we've lost was against Arsenal...and I think that was the best game we played in the Prem, just didn't get the result we needed. Luckily, our poorest performance (against Ipswich), we still walked away with a point

Of the 36 teams, Villa and Liverpool are the only squads with 9 points after three games.
There are 5 more games to be played in the league phase.

As a reminder, any team placing 9th to 24th will have to play twice more in a playoff to reach the round of 16. Teams placing 25th to 36th will be eliminated, with no relegation to Europa League.

I am missing the old format.

Evenutally, they will get rid of this knockout format altogether, introduce a European Super League with 30-32 teams and the worst 6-8 teams get relegated every season into their domestic leagues. With playoffs between domestic champions to obtain a spot on the Super League in the following season.

And fans will gain the privilege to pay 200€ a month to watch the Super League on TV.

Quite a set of results today.
It's time for 5 refs.

Yup, City getting shellacked by Sporting was not on my bingo card. That won't have done any harm to Amorim's reputation in the eyes of United fans. Liverpool battered Leverkusen, and while I expected them to win, didn't expect it to be that comfortable. Milan gave Real a humbling tonight as well.

Very entertaining stuff.

Wow Madrid loses at home.

Bellingham, Mbappe, Vini not scoring. After losing to Barca a week ago, they have this performance, though they dominated possession and got up a lot of shots.

Villa just conceded one of the strangest penalties I've ever seen, against Brugge.

The same thing Arsenal got away with in last years CL......

We didn't deserve the win, but shite way to lose.

Really poor run over last 2-3 weeks. No energy or cohesion. Liverpool away this week then a break. Hopefully we can jag something at Anfield

If you offered 3 wins from 4 games at CL at the beginning, every Villa fan would have been happy with that, so some perspective is important. We aren't playing well, but are in the Top 8 in CL and 6th in the EPL (same points as 4th and 1 point off 3rd)

I recall posting about it as well and agreeing with Tuchel.

A ref's role is to apply the law. In this case, Mings switched off and picked the ball up. I heard a former ref claim common sense should have been used. To that, I disagree with vehemently. If you have an issue, it should be with the law itself, not the ref who enforced it.

One could argue the opposing club should possibly show gamesmanship. But that's for another time...

Where's the Arsenal fan that believes the ref is against them in every match?

In the second half of yesterday's match, the ball ran along the touchline when an Inter player moved toward it. Arteta picked it up before it went out of play.

Isn't that an instant red for entering the field of play to interfere with play?

I agree with you. It is a penalty and wasn't complaining that it was awarded...just a terrible way to lose a game.

AND the inconsistency that Arsenal weren't penalised.

Conor Bradley looks like a nice talent. His well-timed tackle on Mbappe there has really lifted Anfield.

It's not hard to imagine Mbappe has already hit his athletic peak and is on the decline.

He sold everything to the ketamine powered alchemy dark magicians that you can only find in the spookiest undercover London dungeons.

Thanks for allowing me to witness that 2018 WC campaign.

He looked like a total donkey today, way off the pace and positionally lost.

Did anyone else see that incredibly dodgy decision denying Villa the win at the end of their match against Juve? He barely touched the keeper.

His arm was up and out on the keeper. I'm not surprised it was called...but we got lucky as heck.

We are 0-0 masters while we don't have a healthy striker. Quite frustrating

That was a VERY soft decision and I don't think that's called in most EPL games. Yes there was slight contact, but Carlos was only competing for the ball, no intent to knock Keeper off the ball. It was poor hands from the keeper, but he's been bailed out by the ref

Mbappe, Vini, and Jude with three nice goals vs Atalanta in Bergamo. 3-1 Real with 30 to go. Has been a nice game to watch

edit: Lookman makes it 2-3 with another good finish.

Hope to see Retegui come on and make it 3-3
edit: almost
