Draft Picks as Compensation

Should draft picks be able to be used as financial compensation when trying to match salaries?

Using a standard of "current year value" each draft pick could have a financial value put on it based on current team standings. A future first pick of the Wizards - assumed first pick - would be worth $12.5m while a Cavs future first - assumed last pick - is only worth $2.5m.

This value would fluctuate during the season as standings change. This also allows for easier trades when attaching picks.

No. For the obvious reason that draft position fluctuates too much.

No. It shouldn't. You only count current year salary and future draft picks all have $0 current year salary.

No. For the same reason that draft rights held don't count as outgoing salary. The draft pick has no salary in the current year. And, as Texas Chuck pointed out, there's too much fluctuation on a daily basis in season.

I think totally defeats the purpose of trading picks. They could not be used as added value in the same way if they represented salary. It’s hard enough to salary match in trades under the current rules.

Yep, it would create likely more issues than the OP is trying to solve.
