Re: Official RJ Barrett Thread Part 2
Before the trade, of someone had told me that we would be getting a 23/24 year old SG who would put up:
22.5ppg/ 6.5 rpg/ 4.8 apg/ 51% FG/ 36.9 - 3pt%/ 58.7 TS%.......in his first 54 games as a Raptor, for an expiring OG (who no longer wanted to be here), I would have been ecstatic.

Re: Official RJ Barrett Thread Part 2
imo, RJ should purely take on a facilitator role if he's on-ball. He should change to a Nash-like mentality with a goal of getting 20 assists with a FGA under 13

Re: Official RJ Barrett Thread Part 2
A few drives where he tried to force things and a few sloppy passes, but it’s ridiculous how few calls he has been getting lately. 5 FTA in the last three games combined. Dinwiddie (8 FTA) and Lively (6 FTA) both had more FTA in ~25 minutes each in the Mavs game than RJ has in his last ~100 minutes while we couldn’t even breathe on KAT or Butler the last two games either.

Didn't know it was that bad. He is a physical player, seeks contact & his whole game is based on attacking the rim.
This is shame.

It’s actually 4 FTA in the last 3 games, so it’s even worse. Typo lol.

Re: Official RJ Barrett Thread Part 2
On the bright side, he was a team best +4 tonight.
A triple double is still a triple double even if he didn't get it in the most impressive way. Some of the turnovers were really bad tonight in particular.
We can complain about the officiating but he also needs to find a way to manufacture fouls too like all good scorers do if he is going to rely on this play style. Even Superstars are going to have these 5-18 games but the difference is most of them will also have 8-10 FTA's as well to still get their 20 points and salvage a dreadful game into just a bad one. That's the next step for RJ is minimizing the number of games like this which he still has too many of.

I would definitely say he is getting shafted when it comes to getting calls

He's gotta be better on the road. Raptors should file a complaint with the league, there's no way he's not getting fouled on these drives.

His FTA is at a career high, and his FTr is basically his career average, calls are missed for sure, but it's not like he's getting robbed out there.
Miami and NYC are 1st and 7th in the league for least FTA by their opponent, Dallas is 20th so that one is a bit of an outlier. We are just playing better teams that don't typically give up many FTA, nothing suspicious.

Props TZ!

Re: Official RJ Barrett Thread Part 2
When RJ loses his composure, it’s a clear indication that something is amiss. Just because he’s having an exceptional year in free throw rates doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be earning more. This is where critical thinking comes into play.

That triple double is worth nothing, he's playing like a metronome and is stat padding. His triple double comes not naturally with the flow of the game.

Re: Official RJ Barrett Thread Part 2
Anyone who has watched the last few games can see how few calls RJ is getting despite contact vs how other guys ARE getting calls.
In another year, Darko would be saying something. This year, bite the lip.
On to the next one

If you actually watch the games, the non-calls are highly suspicious.

RJ can’t have a bad game cause the pod boys called his contract a toxic asset from day one. You guys will find the metrics to devalue him but when it comes to those in favour will find the metrics to find positives in their had play.

Strong players who go down hill are often penalized in this area. RJ has to learn how to flop better

Bad reffing doesn't need to be intentional, we're looking at 2 teams that dont foul very often so they likely get the benefit of the doubt over RJ.
I'm not saying calls aren't being missed, just that it's not like he's being targeted.

He has good games and he has bad games, it's not hating to address the bad games. He's played better than I expected based off his NYC tenure, but not enough for me to reasonably throw away 5 years of stats. Stop being so inflammatory.

Props TZ!

He doesn't really have an foul drawing craft. He pretty much just barrels into guys. I would also wonder if his free throw drawing declines as a function of role: ie. does he draw less free throws when he is option #1 because he is being guarded by a better defender. We all know he performs best in a secondary action with a scrambling defense. Those opportunities are less likely if he is the defense's #1 focus.
Also, we shouldn't be taking such small sample sizes and extrapolation them to mean anything. His overall FTR is still good. Here are some drive stats from the past 2 games:
Dejounte Murray: 37 drives, 2 FTA
Trae Young: 32 drives, 0 FTA
RJ Barrett: 30 drives, 0 FTA
Jaylen Brown: 29 drives, 0 FTA
Anthony Edwards: 28 drives, 2 FTA
Driving is not a guaranteed way to get free throws. You need some type of craftiness to really exploit drives.
