(trade challenge) get an attack dog (elite defender), for the Mavs
Mavs have improved in each transfer window since Nico took over, but...I think it's clear that we are one step below the big contenders (Thunder/Celtics) and Irving is not getting any younger, the moment It's now...what is the biggest weakness...?in my opinion, we need an elite defender to throw at the rival stars, to at least slow them down a little... What could the Mavs do, show us your ideas.

Re: (trade challenge) get an attack dog (elite defender), for the Mavs
You can have Jaden Springer for free. C's were apparently trying to get off his expiring $4m contract during the pre-season but teams were asking for draft capital to take it off their hands.
Wouldn't call him an "elite" defender but his niche is supposed to be "lockdown wing/on-ball defender". His problem is that offensively it's pretty hard to keep him on the court. Doesn't seem like Mazzulla is ever going to give him a chance over the other fringe bench players he's got given his emphasis on the 3 ball. Maybe the Mavs could make it work for stretches given how much they play through Kyrie / Luka. Stick him in the corner on offense and have him just run the baseline and defensively pester the **** out of whomever for stretches.
C's paid a 2nd for him last year, probably the only "miss" Stevens has had so far. Think they'd be more than happy to get someone to take him on for free (or paying only one of their own future 2nds in 2030/2031). Overpaid at $4m but is expiring so at the low low cost of "free" or even coming with a bad 2nd attached, it's not too bad.
Mavs have a $4m TPE, he costs $4,018363 (not sure if you still get that margin for error as a 2nd apron team though).

If the Warriors decide to blow it up. And want steph, dray, and klay to retire together.
Mavs get Wiggins, Waters, Santos, and a first.
Gsw gets klay, powell, and kleber.

Murray was just traded for 2 unprotected 1sts and daniels. What you're sending out isn't even positive value imo

He's an off-ball defensive ace. But he's not the kind of on ball defender the OP seems to be after.
Also I don't think 2 2nds gets it done since Maxi has money next year and Portland has zero need for him.

So when I think about how to get Dallas an upgrade to their best 5, I also keep coming back to Gafford might have to go out. And if KCP was in form, I think Dallas should seriously consider that. Of course if he was in form, Orlando probably isn't moving him.
Now KCP back in Dallas playing off a superstar again may be his elixir. He was great with Lebron and with Jokic. But it also just might be a decline.
And there is the pesky problem that Dallas has to add salary here which means Kleber or Powell have to put making the backup center spot that much worse.
It's interesting. But I think I pass?

Overpay MIN to give up Nickeil Alexander-Walker.
Simultaneously makes a rival weaker.

What does overpay look like to you? I wouldn't mind the player, but is he a meaningful upgrade to Marshall/Grimes? He would have to be in order to justify an overpay right?

Someone remind me of the new buyout rules. If Dallas can move the salary to stay under the 1st apron, they could sign a bought out Ben Simmons right? Because that would be my target.

IDK. I know Kyrie has surprised me by quickly becoming the team leader in Dallas. Now I know both he and Simmons have unique personalities so you might be right. But the fact that there have been zero issues with Ky has been a very pleasant surprise.
But he's the kind of defender they could really use. And the price would obviously be right.

Okay then. So let's do this. Bring in the Lakers. Send Vincent to Portland and Kleber to LA. Then LA can chip in one 2nd to help pay the price? Because the Lakers could use Maxi. And its all just money to Portland.

I pretty sure we’re allowed to sign buyout guys. It’s the 2nd apron the ruins that. Ben Simmons would be nice without having to move our assets. Dump Exum?

Not saying New Orleans does this, Dallas doesn’t get outbid, or this is the way to go. But Dallas is notoriously aggressive in mid season trades and they are the betting favorites for Herb jones. So what does that trade look like?
Obviously Gafford+?

There's no way Murray gets traded for this return. I mean he was just traded so we have a pretty good sense of what his value is and a relatively minor injury isn't going to crater it this way. I mean what are the putative reasons for the Pelicans to do this?

I used to suggest a lot of Gafford deals and think it’s still a smart avenue.
But I think my first package is Klay + 2025 first and keeping Gafford. I would guess those packages are similar in value. And Gafford helps Dallas a lot more than Klay and the 2025 first. And Klay makes more than Gafford so could help a bit.
I really think Dallas should be very aggressive this season though, windows are short in the NBA. Especially when your second best player is seven years older than your MVP candidate..
