Whoever wins tonight, is up 1-0 in the Finals if they matchup again. lol

I jest, I jest, should be a fun one tonight as the only game on, lots of eyes on two teams from smaller markets.

In terms of incentive, one I can clearly think of is a tiebreaker incentive.

Tiebreakers work like normal except for the winner, the winner basically gets the tiebreaker over every other team with the same record regardless of the other tiebreakers.

Won’t be every year, but if you see it where an NBA Cup winner is tied with a team in terms of seeding, could make all the difference. Like, if a 6 and 7 seed are tied record wise and the 7 had won the NBA cup, the 7 seed ends up move up one spot because their NBA Cup tiebreaker trumps the others. That way, there isn’t a drastic change to the current playoff format, like a year where maybe a team that doesn’t make the playoffs wins the NBA cup, but still has playoff implications to encourage teams to try and win the games.

How about this? If you win the cup you get to pick the team you play in the first round (out of any qualifying teams in your conference). Second round and on goes by standings.

Damn Giannis w a crazy stat line: 28, 19, 10 & 5 ()_()
It’s a shame this is just an exhibition game and not a real regular season game and it won’t go in the record books.
Great game though.

I'll be honest, if I'm the Bucks I'd sit Dame and Giannis and Middleton. Why make them play a game that doesn't matter at all? With the history of those 3 guys, I feel like the odds of one of them getting hurt tonight are really high.

You actually think the NBA would allow that? Or that the players would be down for it?

Both OKC and the Bucks went hard tonight and clearly
wanted to win.

Half the time we have fans screaming that today's players are soft and entitled and then the other half the time we have fans saying to sit dudes because the games don't matter.

Which one is it lol

As a Blazer fan, awesome to see Dame play well and win the Cup. Hope the Bucks make some serious noise in the playoffs this year.

Well it’s not contradictory because I am saying what I would do if I’m the Bucks, not what I want as a fan.

It’s both.
The players (mostly) are soft and entitled, and the games (mostly) don’t matter.
Those things are not mutually exclusive in any way.
Simple fix of the latter would be to make the games matter more by shortening the regular season.
A fix for the former that the NBA Cup highlights would be to end guaranteed contracts. If players only play hard every game if cash is on the line, then ending guaranteed contracts gets us closer to that.
All basketball revenue is already split between owners and players, so it wouldn’t cost the players collectively any money. It would just mean more players share in the pie, and fans get a more competitive product as well.

Having games Wednesday would be the dumbest thing ever.

So a team has a great cup tournament, wins the whole thing in Las Vegas, and then has a game the next night - an extra back-to-back - in Orlando or wherever?

The only way to insure something like that does not happen is to have a blank slate on Wednesday.

OKC didn't have Chet but then again no Midds for Bucks so...yeah seemed like a fair handicap for both teams.

I really think the NBA needs to push having a large portion of the players pie (say 20%) be dedicated to the cup, regular season awards and playoffs. Players as a whole will still get the same amount of money, but it will go to those who earn it during the regular season. Imagine the cup winners getting $1.5m a piece, First team All-Cup team getting $5m bonus, $10m for Cup Mvp, etc. You telling the Tatum's and Luka's of the world not being motivated for a chance at $15m, or Dame getting an extra $5m for key performances, or the whole roster getting $25m if they win. You could really see the last couple years where guys were motivated to get the low-end roster $500k and this would intensify it more. I would tune in to see the best players in the world fighting for $50m of awards in a 2-game playoff.

I can't believe you honestly went with that take pre-game and defended it after. You wanted the Bucks to go undefeated in every Cup game, make it to the finals and then just sit out their stars because the game doesn't count in the record books?

Even if they didn't get a chance to add a W to their record, winning the Cup has significance to most organizations even if fans don't think so. You can read/watch countless videos of how disappointed players were once their team got eliminated. It's never going to have the same significance as the actual championship but it's still a title to win. Athletes in general some of the most competitive people ever, they'd never just sit out a championship game because they might get hurt
