Just make it better of LAL top 10 protected or SAC pick then. Both sides are happy

ATL has some momentum but still need top of the roster addition(s) to really vault to contender status. I don't think teams in that position to use their 1sts for incremental step-ups like this. Poeltl is better, but not a real difference maker over Capela.

I'll be shocked if the Hawks trade Capela for another center. It doesn't make sense financially or roster-wise with Okongwu on a multi-year deal.

If anything, they'd move OO+1st for a starting center and look to re-sign Clint relatively cheaply as the backup.

I don't see Toronto downgrading to Capela this year, At the same time, as others have said, Atlanta seems unlikely to use a 1st to make the relatively small upgrade at centre.

Beyond that, the reporting suggests that Atlanta is looking for ways to upgrade the rotation using Capela's expiring, with the understanding that Okongwu would take on a bigger role, supplemented by more minutes from Nance. The goal, as I understand it, is not to upgrade at centre, but rather in other parts of the rotation, of which backup point guard might be the most important component. Given that, I would suggest an alternative.

Atlanta sends Capela to the Lakers for DLo and Hood-Schifino. Draft picks probably don't need to go either way. The Lakers get a competent centre for Dlo, while reserving draft capital for other moves. Despite a down year, DLo is a substantial upgrade over Krejci. All that said, while this works salary wise for LA, just, Capela's $2 million in unlikely incentives push them over the 2nd apron, and it might make more sense to pursue Valanciunas rather than Capela, while using DLo to upgrade other areas.

Atlanta has no incentive to help the Lakers be better this season since they own their unprotected 1st round pick.
Available backup minutes behind Trae is about 10-12 minutes, maybe maxed at 15 minutes. Hawks would be better off waiving Cody Zeller and signing someone like Dennis Smith Jr, Fultz, etc to fill those minutes.

With OO now injured, I don't see Capela being moved without at least a backup level in return. In addition, there is less than a 0% chance Atlanta helps the Lakers out by filling a major need for them with the Hawks owning the Lakers 2025 1st.
