Most of the comments I've seen disparaging it are from casuals who dislike everything.
Of course it can be tweaked and changed - almost everything that has become a mainstay in different sports has had to find a happy medium.
What do you mean it literally doesn't take away anything? The schedule is all sorts of **** up because of the tournament. For example, from December 8th-18th, nearly TWO weeks... the Mavs have played TWO games. I'm sure other teams are experiencing something similar. It has completely killed all regular season momentum. And for what? So we can watch a few exhibition games in Vegas with a dead crowd?
I don't think any team is going to complain about getting an extra week or so break after playing ~25 games. Like others have mentioned, the inclusion of the Cup and putting aside a few extra days with no games hasn't impacted both the length of the overall RS season and the b2b situation either. Team's overall dont even have the chance to practice anymore, you seriously don't think they haven't taken advantage of this extra time to get a meaningful one in? That Mavericks team you brought up specifically are banged up with Luka missing tonight's game Luka, Hardy and Exum all still out for tonight's game and Kyrie, Kleber, Naji and PJ all questionable.
I disagree that it's killed RS momentum. Even with the Bucks winning the game that didn't count, it's not going magically impact any contending team's willingness to win. If anything, it helped turn around the Bucks season as they used the Cup tournament to turn their season around make a statement to the league that the Dame/Giannis pairing is firing on all cylinders.
Also, I am not sure what games you were watching (if you even tuned it) but the Las Vegas crowd was lively.
