Synciere wrote:I feel so bad for Julius… traded for KAT and then KAT turns into a superhero lol. Minnesota KAT was lightweight corny, but NYC KAT is a monster. This game felt like Julius versus KAT but really we’re a different team this year with Mikal in the mix.

Still not as geeked as some with the Jekell and Hyde wins and losses, but we’re not whole yet, and Thibs makes good in season adjustments, so our ceiling feels higher with this team.

There's no way Julius would have worked with Mikal, OG and Hart, everyone other than Brunson would be reduced to spot up shooter. Randles "gravity" was always grossly overstated because it's simply just drive and kick, and if you have a really good defender it's 1 v 1 and maybe you send help when he spins, like we did. The way KAT plays you cannot leave him to help, pretty much under any circumstance and that opens the door to cutting lanes which is what Mikal thrives with.

TWolves reddit in this moment is cathartic for anyone who lived in sports-fan fear of committing to the wrong player(s), and always loved the idea of trying to acquire a player like KAT.

Real talk Jalen probably the one that got dubious traded out of here

Nobody got him traded. Leon was always saving the Randle contract to trade for the big fish he wanted. I'd been saying it here on the board for over a year.

Now his money is uncertain and he isn't putting up crazy stats this year. Numbers down across the board, aside from a slight uptick in efficiency.

You mean the guy who only came to the Knicks in the first place because they would give him the most money when the rest of the GMs knew he wasn't as good as he thought of himself?

He got traded to a title contender that went to the conference finals last season fitting into the same position in the front line, starters spot and role as second star as he left. If anyone is messing up his bag it's him, not Rose.

The fact a multiple time allstar and allNBA player was perpetually on the trading block and perceived as a negative trade asset should tell you what kind of magician Rose is in getting KAT for him.

He's in the perfect spot to get his final big contract if he can find it in himself to be as productive in MIN as he was in NY without having a franchise coddle and contort to make him comfortable.

He's going to be one of those salty senoritas that do the podcast circuit badmouthing the Knicks after this is all said and done, although he has to wait until he gets paid again to do it or he won't get that final big bag.

No one will want him on more than a mid level exception if he makes too much noise right now.

Yep no doubt about it Folksssssssssssssssss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Will he be happy being the backup SF?

Compared to his banishment in Minny? I think he'd accept a ballboy role at this point to come back!

I kid but....

DDV is a SUPER emotional player. He is one that plays off the energy of that emotion. He was super charged up playing with his buddies and in NY. He would come back here in a second.

The most important thing at hand right now though is to get Mitch back. We showed we can beat teams without a 3 ball but the ones that have it still drive us nuts. Maybe thats still part of the gelling process of the new system but....when Mitch comes back it will allow our perimeter defenders to sag in the paint so much less since we would have a DPOY level player who knows Thibs system backwards and forwards policing the paint again.

Don't get too attached and bet our future on Mitch coming back. Due to his injury history, he'll be traded for an upgrade.

Taking the long view, perhaps Leon did execute on a five year plan whereby giving Randle his extension was meant to be parlayed into a better player later. I questioned that early extension after Randle's poor performance in the playoffs vs. ATL, but in hindsight it all worked out. As someone who expected KAT was our long-term target going back years, I can rationalize it like this, though it might be a stretch that Rose could see that far into the future.

We're only one defensive big away from making a title run and I doubt the FO cares if it is Mitch or not.

They are slow-rolling his return so the timeline allows them to showcase him long enough to trade him before he goes lame again.

The trade deadline is Feb. 5. If that is their play, then we should expect Mitch back no later than mid-January for his showcase games.

Or maybe we keep Mitch and go for one of the few Cs that are on a smaller salary like Nick Richards or Walker

We will see on that. But yeah we need an high level rim protector added to this group. It is our single greatest remaining need.

I mentioned this numerous times months ago when I predicted this is a decent possibility to happen. The KAT move (no matter what PR spin claims otherwise)was purely a business move for them. They are second in payroll right now as a smallish market team. And they are a team in flux with their ownership. They needed to get out of that monster contract (already paying Goebert and Davis big money) which is why we got him how we got him.

Some combination of Kolek, Dadiet, Huk , rights to Rokas and FRPs or SRPs can get it done esp for Nick Richards.

I see quite a few opinions on Randle here, most of which are true.

There's some victory lap stuff and bashing of Randle that seems a little out of hand as well.

Randle was a very good player for the Knicks. Yes, he took more money than other teams were offering, but he played well and when Thibs showed up, played in a way that started to elevate the team.

Yet, Randle had his limitations, mainly around holding the ball too long which could stall the offense, at times.
He moved the ball quickly, at times. He was always a willing passer, in the context of being a lead scorer.
Randle would put forth effort on defense, but that came and went too much.
The writing was on the wall for Randle, I think, when the Knicks got OG.
OG cut, moved the ball, didn't stall the offense and the defense is always on, at an elite level.

But, what is nice about this FO, is that all along, it at least FEELS like they are executing a vision of play style - reliable outside shooting, quick decision making, unselfish, willing to defend, willing to cut, plus bball IQ.

And this FO did that, had that vision, along with a cap/roster guru who could guide them to be in the best place to try and execute those plans and a POBO in Leon Rose bold enough to do it.

And it all starts with the initial tank that landed RJ, and the beginning of keeping picks that started with Mills\Perry but continued.

So, it becomes apparent RJ isn't the most efficient player, doesn't really fit with Randle and Brunson? And IQ is about to get paid an amount that might ruin their plan and vision? Both get moved for their ideal player in OG.

Before that, made the culture/play style move by moving low bball IQ, low effort Cam for high effort, high bball IQ Hart.
No picks given up for OG
Get Donte for FA $
Get Mikal for 5 picks but no players of note

So, we all thought the plan was the 4 Villanovans and Randle.

But as part of the vision of ball movement, ball not sticking, defensive effort, and the fact that the Knicks prioritized more offense at C because they could live with what they got from the 4 in OG, the Knicks moved Randle (and Donte) for KAT.

It doesn't mean Randle wasn't a good Knick. Like with RJ, the Knicks were patient, played good ball under a good coach, who raised the value of these players, and then when the timing was right, the Knicks moved them for better players who are a BETTER FIT on what the team wants to do.

Randle had a good run here.

When the Knicks traded Walt Bellamy for Dave DeBusschere, it didn't mean Bellamay was a piece of sh*t. He was a very good player traded for a better player and fit.

When Cazzie Russell was traded for Jerry Lucas, he wasn't a bum. The Knicks needed Lucas because of the injuries to Willis Reed.

When Mike Riordan, Dave Stallworth went for Earl Monroe, they weren't dicks. Knicks got a steal.

This FO builds value with players, but since it's Aller, they are pretty relentless in paying the correct $ value for players so they can be moved.

Randle was very good, the TWolves were in a situation, and I think Knicks4Real has it 100%, Knicks were looking to this day for several years.

And I think the Knicks see Mitch's 12 million or whatever he makes this year, always have seen it, as a possible trade chip down the line.
And Thibs loves what Mitch brings, he's in the "circle of trust" when he's on the floor, but I'm not sure he's in Thibs or the FO "circle of trust" as far as being reliably available.

And just like Knicks were willing to move Donte with zero sentimentality to make the correct move, I think the Knicks really want to upgrade the backup C position with a rim protector they are more confident will stay healthy.

It might be Mitch's $ or someone else (there isn't too many other someone elses) but I think for what they perceive the good of the team, they are looking to move Mitch at some point. Might be the offseason. Knicks are in their 2nd 5 year plan now, but the 1st year of it. They won't panic.
