The Blazers were dug in and stubborn about trading him to Miami after his agent backed them into a corner.

IF the Heat offered Herro for Lillard, that was more than fair for Portland.

Yes. You have a top 15 player in the world wanting only your team and fills the biggest need on your team while you’re coming fresh off a finals trip. A good front office is navigating the nonsense and finding a way to get that done.

I tend to agree, but how much more than Herro could they have offered before it was a complete overpay?

They can want it, but that mindset will likely lead to them getting it elsewhere. Cant play role players premium contracts. Pay those to your real stars. Keep drafting until someone stands out.

You're looking at a future when this team will be paying Bam and Herro max money (until Bam is moved in a year or 2), the future isn't looking bright, it's looking like Beal's Washington Wizards except without the high draft pick misses. Hopefully Miami can get at least 1 future possible top 10 (hopefully top 3) pick out of Butler.

BTW, this team loves to overpay it's own players, Martin almost got overpaid but his agent screwed that up. This FO said no to Vincent for 11 mil a year and a year later sent a 1st to pay Rozier nearly 25 mil a year.

Then just rebuild. The problem with this FO is they drink their own culture cool aid. Culture is important but at the end of the day elite talent is what wins you multiple championships. The best way to get elite talent is draft. Between Bam, Herro and Butler Heat can get 6-8 first round picks back. They may not be the best ones, but you can use them to move up the draft if you need to. But FO has to be willing to be really bad for 3-4 seasons.

Seriously. This front office is dead set on doing anything possible to avoid actually rebuilding and looking to get some young studs in the draft. Their insistence on kicking the can down the road to continue to put together these treadmill teams is nuts. Do they think we as fans want this or something? Bizarre.

Pat’s Front Office work now (assuming he is still calling the shots) actually reminds me of watching athletes get old. He has the exact same hesitation and lack of decisiveness, trying to force things that used to work but no longer do, and a complete inability to accept the current reality.

The problem has always been, that GMs didnt value Herro or Winslow as much in a trade. That is not the Heat's fault.

No blame on the front office at all. Blazers front office Cronin did not trade Lillard to us out of spite. They failed to do right by Damian after him being loyal to them all those years, so there was nothing we could do about that.

It just sucks because ultimately even though we had no control over it, the fact of the matter is we struck out AGAIN.

How many has it been?, Giannis, Harden, Kyrie, KD, Beal, etc…

If a front office is doing that, then you float out your best offer to the media and make the Portland fanbase put some pressure on the FO but that isn't Riley's style, his style is look for leverage.... like Lillard asking to go to Miami and then offering much less than he's worth. I understand Portland went radio silent but so did Miami.

He will always be on my short list of favorite players here but the windows has come and gone building around him. Especially with a new deal causing possible friction
