This doesn't work for GS. The base salaries work, but Johnson has $4.5M in unlikely incentives which counts toward the Apron salary. This puts GS about $2M over their hard cap.

Edit: Make that about $1M over since they lose $1M unlikely for Looney.

For GS - I don't like Cam enough for this, but they should be happy to sell Kuminga at the price of fillers + 2 picks imo.

Expensive gamble on him developing into a second option for Luka while Kyrie is still elite. If you squint and picture some of their unrealistic ceilings, Lively/PJ/Kuminga/Grimes/Luka is a nice starting line up in 4 years..

Dallas is already pushed too far in to dream of adding a third star or a young star. So to me Dallas has two main options….

1) work around the edges and keep the 2031 first for a big trade in a few years when Kyrie is no longer playing at this level
2) take a gamble on a young player developing in those years while Kyrie is still playing at this level.

He wants a max contract in the offseason. Even if they want to gamble on him, it's hardly low cost.

Yes, I called it expensive so no it’s not low cost.. it’s two firsts for a coin flip on a guy hitting his ceiling - and you have to pay the guy (max or not) before you really know..

And he can want a max contract, just like Ingram and others.. Teams have to give those contracts out though and the team that Kuminga finishes the season with will have the option to match it.. But given his lack of consistency, I don’t see anyone doing that though.

at that point, Dallas would have had him in practice and a playoff run and will have a decent idea if they think he’s worth the risk or not?

Though I see him more likely as a 3yr100-110 deal offer than getting a max. Maybe it’s a player option and a trade kicker, Brooklyn trying to dress it up to make it a tougher decision to match.. But don’t see why a team would give him a full max.

Nice catch. Would need to involve Moody as well, which complicates a bad idea further.

So..

Powell, Exum, Morris for Kuminga? With Morris getting shipped to Det with cash?

If Dallas goes and signs a rest of season contract, I believe** the cap hit would be low enough to keep Dallas under the apron. Or finding a 2nd round exem player with their baby cap hit..

If not, it works with Prosper for an actual minimum contract. But other options sound better..

Dallas should be happier keeping Maxi though, even if it makes the team more expensive.. We love him here still despite his shot just completely leaving us.

Not up enough on the financials to contribute there (is there a way to send enough money out to Detroit for GS to duck the tax?), but in terms of player/pick value it makes sense to me for them if they don't expect to be able to find a deal both parties with Kuminga.

Ducking the tax feels like a long road for this trade. Probably ends up being GSW dumping Payton on Det and hoping Exum plays the role in the playoffs.. don’t think Kuminga doesn’t make enough to do it himself, once the roster spot is backfilled.

But this entire thread is not legal as I was wrong about the apron/GSW so not the expert I thought I was.
