Top bidders for Kelly Olynyk?

Post#1 » by MessiahUjiri » Fri Dec 27, 2024 5:12 am

Context:

Kelly Olynyk is well liked, and is ideally an “elite backup” next to a star big. He’s like a worse version of Sengun, in some ways, but still valuable for a contending team.

Makes 12M this and next year.
Ideally, the Raps are interested in picks. They’d be willing to take on bad contracts, and maybe even throw in their own ‘26 2nd, if it helps justify a 1st rounder in return.

Who can make the highest bid for him?

You not getting a first for Kelly. How many seconds you want for him?

He's a C, and he can pass

I agree he's not elite. He also isn't as good as he was a few years ago when he started for DET. I've watched Olynyk a ton over his career, and I also think his days in a playoff rotation are over: he is too slow to guard on the perimeter; too small to guard in the paint; he's lost speed and is mostly ground-bound; his rebounding is not good enough for a C/PF. Good locker room presence though, and for a developing team, that matters a bit.

I've got Olynyk pegged as a back of the rotation guy who won't make the top 8 of any team in the playoffs. If I'm right, he's slightly negative on his current contract, but should be neutral filler next year when his contract expires.

Warriors badly need a big who can shoot. I'd offer GP2 & Looney (both expiring) for Kelly O if Toronto wants off his future money.

Orlando should be interested with Wagner going down and Isaac playing like caca.

However, a couple of seconds is the extent of Olynyk value.

Would love him in ORL and Cole Anthony's salary is a straight swap (only one year, then TO)...but I agree that a frp is a bit rich

I’ll probably get hit from both sides, but Mitchell and Kelly for Cole Anthony, Cojo, and the later of Orl/Den firsts feels like a reasonable deal if the go is to get a first..

He is likely worth a few 2nds +contract back.

Important to note, the Raps could trade Portlands 2nd as part of the deal for a 1st so it would be like a team dropping 10-15 spots in a draft for Olynyk.

I'd do that just because I want ORL's manic defense to adopt the best nickname ever...

I don’t think he has a ton of value. He could be a useful player in the right situation. Definitely not getting a first for him. If you take back a longer contract you can get a second or two.

GP2 + Landale + 2nds to Toronto

Looney to Houston

Olynyk to GS

Seems like a pretty reasonable deal all around.

We should make this an annual thread. Maybe a sticky.

Tucker/Bones/2nd(s?) should be in the mix. Clippers could use a center and get one while ducking tax. Raps take no future money and get a pick for a guy paid more than his game warrants currently.

Yeah. The deal seems straightforward to me if Orlando wants to replace Mo Wags for this year.

The worse of their 2 first rounders (or just Denver's, so Orlando keeps max flexibility with their picks if they eventually try to trade for a scoring guard/elite shooting wing to be their 4th perimeter starter with Suggs, Franz and Banchero), Cole Anthony and Cory Joseph for #35, Olynyk and Davion Mitchell.

I think a potential dealbreaker would be that maybe Orlando is more concerned with getting under the tax next year and doesn't think they can really win the title this year.

They might just wanna live without the 15-20 minutes of shooting at the 5 and say trade their first and Cole Anthony for say Jevon Carter, Duarte's expiring and #40 from the Bulls. That would save them like 6M and they can probably duck under the tax by letting Gary Harris leave and giving Jett Howard away to some team with an exception (or an expiring if he's traded this year) who would kick the tires on him if it cost them nothing.

I like this. Both Davion and Olynyk can play good backup minutes for Orlando.

The rookie at >#25 pick amounts to someone who may or may not ever produce at Davion+Olynyk’s current level.

For the raptors it’s a matter of future alignment and tanking, so I’d do it.
