Detroit wins playing Minnesota retools. Brooklyn gets assets

Post#1 » by Xman » Sun Dec 29, 2024 10:06 pm

Detroit wants in the playoffs. This pushes them in.
Det gets CamJ, Randle.

Minnesota needs center, pf change and pg.
Minnesota gets DSharpe, Clowney, Tobias, Sasser.
Fills the holes.
Note- could dump a couple of cheap contracts to Brooklyn. Might technically be two deals due to rules.

Brooklyn gets thj and picks. Maybe a couple of small contracts from minny.
Brk clears cap by moving cam for expiring and picks. Plus, another trade exception if someone wants to pay to dump contracts.
Picks: bkn can send one of hou/mil/phx for 2025 Det swap top 10 protected: also, Detroit 2026 first (protection changed 10/10/2nds). With this trade the pick should be 11-19 range).
Detroit also ships two seconds to Minnesota if needed and could send a few to brk if needed.

Year it up or adjust if possible.

It's too much salary for Minnesota to take in long term. I also don't see the Nets wanting to give up Clowney for expirings?

I don’t see Detroit taking on Randle, especially while keeping Harris.

I can see Detroit going after Cam Johnson though

It’s a small piece with the idea of improving ten plus spots in this draft (26 to 14?) and getting a 2026 pick that should also be 12-19 range. Not wanting to dump him but getting value. The extra cap space is just a bonus (possibly a nice bonus depending on how strapped teams are for cap space).

It’s a QO for Sharpe next year and only this year and next for the other three. So, not a long term hit.

Call me crazy but we get rid of our 2 worst starting forwards and upgrade them whilst also getting back our 1st rounder. Win-win

I am fine with Randle for Harris, but not with Randle or Harris ending in Minnesota. Bring in a 3rd team that might want Harris on his current deal. Detroit gets an upgrade, 3rd team takes a chance on a properly paid Harris, and Wolves can get what they desperately need, a starting PG to let Mike Conley become a backup, and a cheap backup C to help with the non Rudy minutes.

Could re-route Tobias and a couple of seconds to Washington for Brogdon. Pg and expiring.

This is a question (I honestly don’t know the answer,) isn’t Brogdon frequently hurt? I know he had those issues a few years back but I haven’t followed him since.

The deal is pretty awful for Minnesota. The Wolves get significantly worse while taking on money this year and next, and they seem to be giving up a 1st for this privilege. The deal doesn't make Minnesota better now, has little longterm upside (probably negative longterm value when the 1st is factored in), and makes their financial situation worse. I think I can safely say the Wolves would say no pretty quickly.

One additional thought, the deal isn't even legal since Minnesota can't take back more salary than they send out.

No from Brooklyn. There are a dozen better deals for Johnson, unless we're talking multiple unprotected 1sts from DET, not the picks outlined in the OP. Clowney is completely off the table, no other team would pay how we value him so it's pointless to include him in trade discussions.
Some people really have a way with words. Other people... not... have... way.

This sounds on the lower end of a Cam J trade (but it could be argued, sure...), but Sharpe and Clowney are what? Goodwill throw-ins? I'd say there's significant room between what Brooklyn would LIKE for Cam J, and THIS, with the other team still getting a decent deal...

Bkn obviously wants more. But, keeping him would be stupid. Take the best deal. Forget pipe dreams and take what you can get.

And, no, there are not a dozen better deals out there or he would already be gone.

I agree there's likely not "a dozen better offers out there", but you only need 1, not a dozen. And as I said, both Clowney and Sharpe Are young. inexpensive, and ideal for a rebuilding team like the Nets in this scenario. I personally see Minny getting too much back for Randle, and Detroit not kicking in enough to be getting their end, either. I mean, we already know what Harris is: decent counting stats, but not a first or 2nd option for a team trying to win. Sasser is a decent young combo guard still putting things together, and probably has value off the bench as a role player. But still I don't see expiring salary, a top 10 protected swap, and a top 10 (for 2 years) pick with NO young potential talent coming INTO Brooklyn as the top offer, especially when this has 2 of their promising young guys heading OUT. I could talk myself into this being a trade for Cam J if nothing else presented itself. I just don't see why Brooklyn would also throw in Sharpe and Clowney. It's not for roster spots, and if it was they'd throw in someone else, I'm sure. So why? I mean, I'd try to get them included in a Cleveland deal for Cam J (why seems like a sub-optimal fit anyway...), but I could see why Brooklyn would baulk at including them without additional value.
