Fixing the Kings - have your cake and it eat too (IND/HOU)

Post#1 » by eitanr » Sun Dec 29, 2024 3:04 pm

The Kings are in turmoil. What else is new. They’d clearly like to make a playoff run, but they also need to re-think pieces with an eye of the future. Essentially they’d like to compete while rebuilding. Always a tough endeavour.

Thinking further, the Kings can’t move DeRozan and should also consider having more usage to Murray. They should take some educated risk on youth that could fit their roster. They also need to get a bit better defensively and bigger in general.

1. Indiana: Heurter, Lyles for Toppin, Jackson, Wiseman

Why for Pacers: Jackson is out for the year, Wiseman has been disappointing and they get to clear his salary. The swap essentially lyles and heurter for Toppin. Lyles is a better fit for Indiana as a spacing clear back up 4 to Siakam and also can play backup 5 min as he did with the kings. Huerter adds a needed spacing 3 with Nesmith being on/off injury list. Indiana keeps their spacing and saves cap.

2. Houston: Fox for Sheppard, Eason, Tate, Adams

Why for Houston: 4 for 1 moves are never easy (maybe Wiseman is rerouted here via Indiana), but the move allows Houston to compete for a chip right now. They have a crazy amount of depth and should still be able to field a better playoff rotation - Fox/Green/Brooks/Smith/Senguin with FVV/Thompson/Whitmore/Green/Jock off bench is fire.

New look Kings:

Sabonis/ Adams/ Wiseman
Toppin/ Eason
Murray/ Ellis/ Tate
Derozan/ Monk
Sheppard/ Carter

iR Jackson

Kings put Murray in a position to gain a bit more usage with pure spacers like Sheppard and Toppin around him. Derozan is in a better position to play well here as well with more spacing for him, ditto for Sabonis.

The Kings play the rest of the season out and see whether Murray can take next step, Sheppard and Eason are potential starters/high end rotation guys and if this core can grow. If not, they head into draft night to address, but there are options. The moves also should elevate Demar’s play in case they need his value increased to move him in off season.

Realizing Wiseman is out too for Indiana, adding more reason for them to move James’ deal and get a bit more security with Lyles playing some 5 and backup 4 min of course

Obi is essentially the best possible backup 4 in the league for Indy. He’s a perfect fit with Haliburton or McConnell. And Huerter just isn’t going to get much run in Indy either, with Haliburton, McConnell, Nembhard, Mathurin, Nesmith, and Sheppard, let alone Walker playing the 3.

There is essentially nothing for Indy to consider here. We would want to salary dump Wiseman. We would want to rehab Jackson. And Obi is the best player involved, while Huerter would be the worst contract involved.

Eason is on my untouchable list, but I might consider a swap for Fox with him as the primary asset returning.

Green would have to back as well as we can't pay both Green and Fox. But that would be it, no other assets. Fox would need to be okay with a below market deal and Fred would need to extend at half his current salary.

There is nowhere close to enough talent coming back from Houston here to pull Fox. You need to start with Smith and add at least two GOOD firsts before it’s even a discussion.

As far as the Indy part, there is nothing worth even thinking about there. All I see are constant injury risk players? Nah.

I don’t see why Green has to go out in this trade.

Make him the third guard and flip him in the offseason. Or in some unrelated deal this season.
