Nets Seeking Multiple First Round Picks For Cam Johnson

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Mon Dec 30, 2024 2:20 am

The Brooklyn Nets are seeking multiple first round picks on the trade market for Cam Johnson. The Nets were previously seeking first round picks for Dennis Schroder and Dorian Finney-Smith, but settled for three second rounders apiece for the two players.

The Memphis Grizzlies were engaged in trade talks with the Nets on Finney-Smith and could pivot to a pursuit of Johnson. Memphis tried to package Konchar with Luke Kennard's expiring contract in exchange for Finney-Smith.

Johnson is on a four-year, $94.5 million contract with the Nets.

As mentioned here, the Nets also wanted 1sts for Schröder and Finney-Smith and didn't get it.

Cam Johnson is marginally positive on a big contract for a long time. Not sure he's pulling a first either, unless they take back a bad contract, which BKN is loathe to do because they want max cap room.

He''s been good this year for sure, just a shade under 50/40/90.

He's marginally positive on a bad team, which is hard to do.

I agree with you on the picks. The number of picks in a deal is often smoke and mirrors. Teams are trading salary and talent. The money has to match but the talent doesn't. The idea of including picks is to attempt to balance current talent with potential talent. In other words: no player has a specific worth in picks. The picks included in a deal are more about the talent (or lack of talent) coming back in the deal.

That said, I don't think BRK cares about cap space. They have Simmons and Dlo coming off the books this summer. They have their own picks for the next three summers and I expect they will be using all of those. If they wanted to win next season they would be keeping DFS and Cam. I believe they are looking to take back bad money in a Cam trade if it means getting an extra pick in the deal, which is the only way they turn him into "multiple" 1sts. They have to pay someone.
