Clippers get Jerami
Blazers in:
PJ Tucker
Terrence Mann
Derrick Jones Jr
2nd round pick
Out:
Jerami Grant
Kris Murray
Blazers: Rather than seeking draft compensation as the primary asset, Blazers decide to break up Jerami’s contract into smaller contracts with slightly younger players than Grant. I think they look to flip Mann or DJJ for 2nds, but keep them if those offers aren’t available. Kris is included as Clippers will need an additional wing and it prevents Blazers from needing to waive a player. Tucker becomes a mentor for half a season. They get a 2nd as well.
Clippers in:
Jerami Grant
Kris Murray
Out:
PJ Tucker
Mann
Derrick Jones
2nd
Reason: Clippers consolidate for an upgrade in Grant. People don’t like Grant’s contract, but the overall money exchanged here is not significant. Murray is included to help replace some minutes lost. He’s become more playable this year and is young and improving, but definitely not the focal point of this trade.

Re: Clippers get Jerami
Mann and Jones Jr each have more value than Jerami when all things are factored in.

Re: Clippers get Jerami
Mann just signed an extension on Oct 1. Is he even eligible to be traded before the deadline?
Regardless I don't see the Clips having interest. DJJ has been big for them. I prefer DJJ and his contract over Grant. They have been more cost conscience this season after letting PG walk. Don't see them going for Grant.
Can see Clips make a move at the deadline likely involving Tucker's expiring + Bones + draft capital. They can definitely use another playmaking guard to lead the bench unit and also a backup center who can play the non Zubac minutes. Bamba and KPJ are the 2 weak links in the rotation.

Re: Clippers get Jerami
I like Grant and think he would start playing harder if he was in games that mattered.
But.. I think if anyone is owed value it’s LAC. Understanding Portland wouldn’t add anything.
And the 2027 offseason is likely when the Clips try and retool? It’s projecting this far out, but looks like it.

Sadly I dont think Grant has this value. DJJ is playing quite well and while I dont quite understand why, the LAC FO seems to be enamored with Mann.
I think you would be hard pressed to find any team that would take Jerami at 30M AV for 4 more years over DJJ at 10M AV for the next 3

Re: Clippers get Jerami
The Blazers already have Thybulle and Avjida. While I agree that the Clippers would value DJJ more than Grant, it's not clear why the opposite is true.

Re: Clippers get Jerami
I don't see Clippers moving Jones unless it's a clear upgrade. Grant could be one, but not clearly in my opinion. Mann has been disappointing and could end up being, an at best, neutral contract but I can see him bouncing back.
Value wise, though, it's pretty fair.

That is what the FO seems to think.

But when is the last time you heard that take? I think a lot of people (and teams) changed how they value players on big contracts over this summer as teams really started taking the new CBA and aprons seriously.

Yea, it’s a bummer for Portland fans that Jerami hasn’t looked great on the floor because the 2nd apron, hard cap, luxury tax penalties, the entire cap climate has changed since Grant signed his extension… which is too bad because seems best for both parties to part at this time
But Grants contract looks really toxic now to a lot of teams, or it’s just impossible under the new rules to easily make a deal… and it’s not just his cap number it’s worsened by the number of years… kind of stinks for Blazers fans

Re: Clippers get Jerami
I cannot see this deal making sense this year due to trade restrictions on Mann, but even then, I am struggling to believe that the Clippers would part ways with DJJ at the moment. He has fit in seamlessly and I cant see the team taking the risk.
The Clips may be open to trading Norm back to the Blazers. Not sure if that is even viable. Possible that they would need a third team but adding Norm is the only way to make this potential trade work (this season). Personally, I think Norm is way better than Jabari so that makes this trade pretty low probability (but the Clips need to move some guards to make room for others).
LAC IN = Jabari
PHX IN = Norm + Tucker

I figured Norman was the one truly playing out of his mind for the Clippers and was way more off the table than DJJ. Blazers would definitely need to take this for contract reasons if it were on the table, but again would be best trying to flip Norm as his play is too good for tanking at the moment.

The problem with Norm right now is that he is playing too well (almost All-Star) yet he is about to be benched again once Kawhi returns. The Clippers need the defense of Mann in the starting lineup so there is no room for Norm:
C = Zubac / Bamba
PF = DJJ / Batum
SF = Kawhi / Coffey
SG = Mann / Norm / KPJ
PG = Harden / Dunn / Bones
If Norm was traded for Jabari, it would allow the Clips to move DJJ to the SG position and have Mann head to the bench.
C = Zubac / Bamba
PF = Jabari / Batum
SF = Kawhi / Mann / Coffey
SG = DJJ / KPJ / (Christie)
PG = Harden / Dunn / Bones

Yeah, there no way Clippers would consider moving Norm for Jerami, unless Powell suffers a season ending injury

I let the first one go by, but you know Grant’s name is Jerami, right? Blazers do have a Jabari (Walker) but there is obviously no reason to seek him.
