I hate to say it, but for this team to be favored to win a chip they need another top-10 player who is also a 2 way player.

Teams built around a fringe top-10 and fringe top-20 player, both of whom are below average defensively, tend not to win championships. They look great against most of the league in the regular season, but come playoff time it’s a different story.

Team defense wins in the playoffs, of course, having some capable individual defenders is needed in the playoffs but the recent history of title winners show your top player doesn't need to be two-way to win it.

Jokic? No

Curry? No

We can even go back a decade at the beginning of this modern offensive era and ask if Dirk was two way? Nope.

That would mean the Cavs and the Mavs don't have a chance because Luka and DMitch aren't two way players, right?

I think team defense plays a larger role now and sure, the most number of well rounded players you have the better and having top players that at least give the requisite effort to play team defense is needed.

Curry gave the effort, Jokic gave it, too. They weren't anywhere near two way but they certainly gave effort to play team defense.

Can Luka? Hmmm, welp. DMitch, yea, I think so. Brunson or KAT, yes, they'll give it. Will those teams have the team defense to win a title? Time will tell.

Yes, Brunson ranks between 8-12 on most boards. Most guys at the bottom of the top-10 are fringe top 10 players.

The top 6 are some combination of Jokic, Giannis, Luka, Embiid, Tatum, Shai.

The next tier has Brunson, Curry, Durant, Booker, Davis, and Ant

That’s 12 guys in the conversation of top-10. Hence, fringe top-10 player

Again - when the Warriors were winning titles Curry was a top-5 player. Jokic is arguably the best player in the game.

Brunson is currently ranked as the 10th best player in the league by the Ringer.

Sure, swap our KAT with Jokic or Brunson with Luka and it’s a different conversation

Brunson placed 5th in MVP last season and getting a couple of 2nd place votes?

KAT is in the conversation for it this season we'll see where it leads to.

Also in context of having two of the top versatile defensive wings in the league that are two way players, other defensive role players in two point of attack guards that are two way players and an elite defensive center returning. Superglue guys like Hart and to a lesser extant, Precious, both who have some offensive abilities.

So what you are saying about the players is biased towards supporting your opinion instead of looking at the fuller picture of what the Knicks...and yes, the Cavs and Mavs also have. Well balanced teams with high level players performing at an elite level also top 10 defenses and top 10 offenses.

It may be the case that the Celtics and the Thunder wind up in the finals because they have the best team offense and team defense because that is what I kind of look to. Teams with the highest rated offense and defense will put a team in the best position to win against any match up.

We'll see how far the Knicks can come defensive AS A TEAM by season's end, this is a Thibs team, and historically they get better defensively as the season goes along, this season is already following that same pattern.

I think you are underrating Brunson/KAT. They are two of the best players at their positions in the entire league. We have two of the best wing 3&D guys in the league. Hart is one of the best glue guys in the league. Deuce is a great bench player as well. Precious/Shamet are solid bench pieces. Payne isn't trash either. When Mitch comes back, he's one of the best rebounders in the league. We have plenty of talent. It's all about being healthy in April/May/June.

We will also be able to bring in another vet minimum player at the end of February and stay under the cap as well IIRC.

There isn't a better starting 5 offensively in the league. If our bench can pick up the slack we are going to be really tough to beat. I think people are underestimating the team we have right now. Brunson/KAT are one of the best duos in the league. They are par with any teams top two players. Where are all of these teams with top 10-20 players that we can't compete with? Brunson/KAT/Mikal are just as good as any teams top three. Having OG/Hart out there makes us that much tougher.

Coaching/adjustments are big in the playoffs. We have the bullets in the gun. It's all about getting them to perform at their peak.

Putting Embiid and Tatum solidly above Brunson is nasty. Maybe, at his best, Embiid can be the better player but when ever is he at his best. Brunson is there for at least the vast majority of the season.

Tatum is on the same tier as Brunson IMO. He's had the benefit of having a great set of teammates his entire career and being part of the good team from the beginning. It inflates his standing in the league. Good player but Brunson is right there with him IMO.

Brunson has firmly been better than everyone in the next tier the past 2 seasons except for maybe AD. It's not really particularly close with Ant and Booker either. If you want to default to legacy picks for Durant and Curry that's fine but Brunson, on the whole, has been better than both the past 2 seasons.

Brunson is solidly in the 6-10 range. He's not fringe.

Anyone who has watched Tatum play consistently through the years would know that he also doesn't bring it every night in the playoffs. I would say in a 7 game series, Tatum would probably give you 4 good games and 3 bad ones. This is why he didn't get the Finals MVP and Eastern Conference award.

I agree he would be in the same range as Brunson. And the Captain brings it damn near every night in the postseason.

Seriously tho'. The Knicks are obviously pretty good and should be a top four team in the East in terms of winning in the East equity (I'm not particularly obsessed by the seedings).

However, I do think a fully fit - i.e. able to play more or less non-minute restricted line-ups of the coach's choice - Boston (with KP) is at least a level above the best the Knicks (with Mitch) can be.

Health

I think next year is when we'll be the favorites, after we have a chance to load up on vet minimum guys and get maybe another bench scorer or Brock works some magic.

This year, we'd need another wing that can play. Just look at the Celtics from last year, very top heavy but Sam Hauser got real minutes all throughout the playoffs and played legitimate minutes in the finals, he played more than anyone outside the starting 5. Maybe Shamet can be that, but even then we still need 1 more wing/forward that can hit threes.

Hart may already be that guy who can hit threes. He can make them if he chooses to fully buy-in.

We still need 1 guy outside the starting 5 that has size and can defend multiple positions, maybe it's Shamet, but against teams with size we'd need 1 more guy that can switch 1-4. Which is what Hauser was able to do for the Celtics, they had an elite starting 5 and still relied on Hauser for 15mpg in the playoffs because he's a versatile big defender that can hit threes (19 mins for Pritchard as well).

Just listend to this very good conversation between Marci and Katz.

If I'm Leon Rose and I'm concerned about the heavy minutes. I would walk down to Thibs office and say.. "here's a list of wings that are available that we might be able to swing a trade, which player can play 10-20 minutes to replace OG and Mikal's minutes"? And if Thibs say, "he needs to practice first". Leon should just fcking shave his head for that answer.

Wings are just difficult to get, all the bad teams have young ones which they're not trading, and the good teams have wings they aren't trading either.

The only ones I can see that would actually play are Cody Martin, Mattise Thybule (Injured all season) and while he's not a wing Clarkson would play as well.
